Central Armrest Storage box

I am considering rebuilding the Storage box in one of my 75's since the standard , moulded plastic box is an awful waste of space. Anyone ever done this - and can anyone explain just why the smaller half of the current box is designed as it is? We have a deep half and a pretty useless shallow half with some sorts of shapes on it (for what?)
