Help with Water Leaking
 

My Rover 75 Diesel Automatic needs help
I have a Green Rover 75 2003 diesel Automatic

My heater started to blow out cold air, so garage said, need new
heater sensor,
Bought new sensor fitted, £282
Then few weeks later, on way to work on Motoway, speed dropped, temp
Light high. I think Water extreamly low. Had car taken to garage, said needed new water pump.
Had pump fitted, £420
Water still leaking ? but when I switch on heater, the water goes fast ?
If I don't use heating, water lasts longer, but still slowly drops.
What can the problem be ? is it leaking behind the dashboard ? but car
very dry inside Or is the air con faulty ?
Or should I get the EGR COOLER, sent away and checked ?
There is a leak from the gearbox oil cooler pipes And slight leak from the thermostat housing area

They don’t really know but guess it’s the head gasket, but I don’t think that.
Oil temp stays normal. And water only drops much, when heater is on.

They suggested the EGR cooler to be pressure tested first ?

Please can you advise me. Really Love my car, and want to keep her going

I'd put money on it not being the head gasket. Follow the radiator top hose pipe back to the cylinder head connection - that is a common leak point. If the EGR cooler is leaking you should see some staining around it.

Better to take the car to a garage that knows Rovers.

Was the water pump fitted recently? If so I'd have a word with the garage about the leak around the thermostat as it is incorporated within the body of the pump. I would have thought if the garage changed the pump, as a matter of course they would have fitted a new stat.

Have a look at the Y connector under the inlet manifold, these are a known point of water leaks.

And hopefully they did a thorough cold to hot cooling system test on completion of the job............sadly there are quite a few who don't.

Have you checked that the fault isn't the rad cap not sealing properly, another place to check are the heater pipes going through the bulkhead and below the air box houseing they can chaff through,had this problem and the coolant loss was slow but steady. Top ups were about a week apart. A new heater hose solved my leak.

The first bit of advice is stop taking your car to whom ever did the work above, they are having you over, ie cost of heater resistor is.£75.90 for new with postage. It takes about 20 minutes to exchange it over. Therefore the cost should not have been more than £120 less maybe.

Regarding the water pump as already stated it should have been fitted with a new thermostat at the same time. cost of new pump £60

Three hours work to fit at average garage rates £50 an hour total £210 so again they had you over.

Now if you are still losing water make sure you are not topping then header tank up to much, also fit a new cap

Sounds like you had the usual problem of the thermostat opening to soon so an inline stat may have solved your problem, but you have had new water pump fitted lets hope it had a new thermostat fitted at the same time.
