Best car too buy for the track and race days?

Hiya all First post for 2019 and my question is this.

What's the best car too buy if you wanted too take it on the track or compete in racing?

I have thought about the ford probe since knowing from experience from them, however the power is poor from the start I had too spend quite a bit too get her too that performance range so looking for a car that can be pushed even further and still have a decent enough power from the start.

Since doing the rack day I want too go again but this time improve my driving and the car its self. :xmas-smiley-008:

Don't want any car mind as I'm a fussy beeper looking at 90's sports coupes and of course anything older. :snowball:

Looking at fords and of course MG's and Rover motors. :xmas-smiley-008:

Hi, It largely depends on the size of your wallet, ideal track day weapon is the Lotus7 / caterham etc: R500 but these are not coupe's and not fords and can empty your wallet in the blink of an eye! A good alternative is the Mazda MX5.. plenty can be done with these little pocket rockets and are pretty good right out of the box.
If you definitely have to have a 90's ford ... anything with XR/RS attached to it would be a reasonable starting point although even these are commanding silly money now.
If it were me ... I'd definitely go for the Eunos / MX5, it ticks a lot of boxes, just google the drift / race scene.
I used to hillclimb a Maguire mini years ago, most fun I've ever had with my boots on.

How about a pug 106 or a 3 series?

MX5 - there is a long established race series so competition parts are easy to find/buy off the shelf. Buy one, get it to stop and go round corners better then add a turbo and scare yourself :)

If you want a Rover get a ZR or ZS, don't get a ZT (and don't even think about a 75) because they have very little competition history so there are very few readily available upgrade parts - 'I'll invent/fabricate/do them myself' may sound tempting but that way lies either financial ruin or a car that's nowhere as good/fast as an MX5.

French hot hatches are another good option as has been mentioned.

Pretty much perfect advice above. Mx5 is the car to have if you don't have an irrational love of mg rover. They are a cheap well balanced car that come with some goodies if you know what your looking for such as an lsd. They also turbo easy and parts are cheap which is important. An mr2 would be a good alternative but they are more expensive.
Best hot hatches are renaults. Go for a clio or Megane sport and you can't go wrong.

If your dead set on a rover get a zs. They have the best chassis set up due to their double wishbone front suspension and independent rear. I've got a 25 which I've turbod and it's great fun but since driving my zs 180 I've realised how much better it is in standard form with a slight trade off in weight.

Finally get something cheap because you'll end up spending a fortune on it. Take mine for example, remap, gripper diff, gaz gold suspension, lightweight buckets, big brakes etc etc but regardless, it's great fun, cheap to maintain and run, not bad on fuel and generally reliable. Plus I've done everything myself.

I've always liked them mondeos but they've got the same problem the zt's have. Although they have a good chassis and reasonable power they are too heavy and have little scope to improve performance. You want something small and agile to start with that's got a good following and lots of tuning options.
