Banning cars altogether

The thin end of the wedge for Birmingham! Other city's will follow no doubt!

...and they wonder why the High Streets are dying/dead!

I read today that they're looking into closing the loophole which lets the car regenerate/clean the DPF :eek:Nissan Qashqai & Opel/Vauxhall being the worst offenders. https://www.transportenvironment.org...l-levels-tests

No driving cars thru the city centres just means everyone else living on the periphery gets the toxic fumes instead, no real solution to the harm it does to the community.
The population density of this small island is too great. Fact.
The ownership of cars is even greater.
:smilie_re:

It's no joke! we have to choke. :D:D

The first thing that they need to do is bring down the cost of public transport.

And as for 20 MPH speed limits, my mother’s road has had a 20 MPH limit for a number of years and it’s still a racetrack as there is never anyone around to enforce it !

!

It’s not the cost of public transport that needs revising, it’s the fact that it is woeful.

I was in Berlin a few years ago, about a foot of snow had fallen and all the trains were running g and arrived on time, spotlessly clean carriages too.

unless I have misunderstood the title of this thread is sensationalising.
The article does not mention banning cars altogether but from driving thru.

Problems with public transport :-
These are examples that I can think off and I'm sure there are many others and somehow they need to be overcome either by improved public transport, locations of destination or a way of thinking.

convenience, the times it runs ( either too early or too late)
convenience, the place it runs to and from ( 20 mins to get public transport to start journey, 20 mins walk to get to my destination one finished with public transport)
convenience, the time it takes to complete a journey (car 20 minutes, public transport 1 hour)
convenience, going from place to place in the same day, see the points above
convenience, the stuff I have to carry is too big, heavy
"unsafe" walk to public transport
Rain
cost.

Our local city of Chester seems committed to shopping suicide . They are closing the car parks to build bus-stations , but at the same time the bus company has cancelled many of the routes which could have taken you there :duh: The one bus I can now get into Chester now goes a long way round ( you need to pack sandwiches ) , and via the huge Cheshire Oaks retail Outlet Village !!! Needless to say , anyone going shopping now gets off there and doesn't bother going on to Chester . To add insult to injury , the authorities have also banned the use of my pensioners' bus-pass on the park-and-ride which I might have used instead . Couldn't organise a something in a brewery ……………...
….and by the way , parking at Cheshire Oaks is free !

GMTE are putting a £10/year charge on train & tram travel on the free concessionary travel passes from 1st February, Bus travel is unaffected.

You can update your pass by various ways, My missus & myself will be getting our "free" travel pass updated this week as we use the train quite often.

My Guess is that instead of banning cars they will introduce a pollution charge or what ever they want to call it so you can still drive your car into the city but will end up paying for the privilege to go against the cost of clearing up your pollution.

Yes I am sure it will put off regular travellers but if you only travel into the city occasionally you will pay the charge rather than have to try and work out how to get in on public transport.
