Handbrake adjuster direction
 

Which way do your handbrake adjusters point?

a) Gear wheel ends both point towards the front of the car
b) Gear wheel ends both point towards the rear of the car
c) Gear wheel ends point in different directions (one towards the front of the car, one towards the rear)

Just to avoid confusion ;), the gear wheel end is pointing left in this pic:

And does it matter anyway?

Doesn't matter in the slightest, seen them fitted both ways

It doesn't matter until you come to adjust them, then it's nice if they have some adjustment left.

If you fit them in opposite directions then when you're adjusting them then to tighten or slacken the adjusters it'll be the same on either side.
Eg up to tighten down to slacken depending on which way round you fit them.

If you fit them both pointing to the front or rear then to adjust them each side will be opposite ;)

Paint the cog white so its easier to see when adjusting ;)

This is what I've got at the moment. I'll have to turn the gear wheels in different directions to expand (or contract) the shoes. Hard to remember. :mad:

If I flip one of the adjusters round, then turning the gear wheels in the same direction will have the same effect - e.g. flip the RH adjuster so that the gear wheel end points towards the boot and pushing the outer cogs down will expand (as per the LH). Down is out, both sides - much easier to remember :D. But it means taking one of those pesky springs off again :mad:.

The adjustment system on 75/ZT has been around for decades - it was rubbish when it was invented and it's still rubbish now. Even the shoe locators are useless - it's virtually impossible to get the spring pins in and out of the backplate holes without taking the hub off, and you can't do that without messing up the grease caps. :mad:

Thanks to the idiotic spring pins, I just spent the best part of an hour turning one of the adjusters round. :mad::mad:
