Temperature warning
I went for a short drive earlier and when I turned the car off the fans kept going for 5 minutes or so. I don't recall this happening before.
Half an hour later I started off again and noticed the temp gauge was at 10 o'clock. It rapidly headed for 12 o'clock and the engine temperature message came up. I turned the climate control to full heat to hopefully take some heat away and for the rest of the journey it went between 9 o'clock and 11 o'clock or so. I pulled over where I could and the gauge went down quite quickly when not under load. I made it home and again the fans stayed on, though not for as long this time. In a few hours I'll check the coolant but other than that, any ideas? I popped the bonnet and it didn't seem overly hot, no signs of a leak and the thermostat was replaced about 5 years ago. I have a MGR garage nearby so easy to get a T4. |
on my 1.8t the low speed fan cuts in at 104/105 and brings it down to 90 - so it sounds like your low speed fan is not engaging at all as the temp warning light is triggering - coupled with another issue such as coolant loss.Do you have a 2 or 3 speed fan?
|
I have no idea if it's a 2 or 3 speed fan! :D
|
As an 05 i think you will have the 2 speed set up - if so the resistor on these can pack up - do the demist test to see if the fan is working properly .
|
Go to RHS of your front grill - you will see the fan - if there is an 8cm by 3cm silver resistor on the front of the fan cage its a 2 speed - and these resistors are a classic failure point which will stop your fan from bringing your temp down to normal when over heating begins to occur - the V6 temp ranges are different from mine but the principal is the same.

You don't need a T4 just yet! :} To discover whether the radiator fan is at fault, please do the famous "demist test". Start the engine from cold and press the windscreen demist button. Now get out of the car and walk to the radiator grille. Is the fan running continuously? To find out which type of fan you have, looking in through the radiator grille at the fan shroud, a 2 speed fan will have a silver (or maybe gold) coloured resistor mounted at about the two o'clock position. This component is rectangular with a wire at each end. Please report back. Simon |
Start from cold. Put air con to "ECON" and turn on front screen demist. Nip round the front and have a look through the grille to see if the fan is permanently turning. If not it's probably time for a new resistor.

Right guys, after checking the coolant (it's fine) I turned the ignition on, selected Econ and demist, started the car, and the fan is going on and off. There's a resistor at 2 o'clock, too grubby to say if it's silver or gold.

You have most likely found your culprit the resistor needs changing, from silver to gold one if it's silver, if it's gold then it is most likely failing and needs changing. https://i.imgur.com/hYyWtBfl.jpg1 https://i.imgur.com/mUSH3Qzl.jpg2 https://i.imgur.com/ZUxJ7RRl.jpg4 https://i.imgur.com/nbH0qewl.jpg5 https://www.the75andztclub.co.uk/for...d.php?t=216734 |
The resistor has arrived courtesy DMGRS... I need to drive the car a few miles to the garage. Is the best way to suck heat away to have it on Econ, heat up to full blast?
