75 1.8t auto,non start

drove my 75 1.8 t auto approx a mile ,it cut out and wouldnt restart.called rac,rac mechanic checked spark ,fine, listend on passengers side rear seat as i cranked engine.said pump was priming .disconnected pipe under bonnet asked me to crank engine again, told .e no fuel coming through, said it was either separated fuel filter or failled fuel pump, towed me home.next day i checked filterno problem,i then purchased new pump assembly and replaced it.still no fuel getting to engine, .HELP!

Most likely culprit is the fuel filter in the n/s of the tank. The plastic housing slightly unscrews itself & the fuel is pumped back into the tank. There’s a lot of info on this if you search for FFS (Fuel Filter Syndrome)
You need to lift the back seat base, unbolt the black cover & you'll see the filter housing, release the fuel pipe & unscrew the locking ring & carefully lift the housing out of the tank. It may not be obvious as it normally only backs of 1/4 of a turn if that. Grab it top & bottom & twist it back together, there is a thing known as the FOC (Fabled Orange Clip) which once fitted prevents it happening again. If the car was fairly low on fuel you may need to pop a gallon or so in before it will start as it can pump all the fuel into the left of the tank.
You might find your fuel gauge does funny things for a little while afterwards until the 2 senders sort themselves out but this is quite normal

Oh I forgot to mention sometimes the o-ring fails in the joint of the filter

The filter was the first thing I checked.it had not undone but I fitted a clip to it any way.As that had no effect I put anew pump in,still no fuel at engine.there is around 2 gallons of fuel on board.no fuel at fuel pipe at engine!

Failed crankshaft sensor ? Will cause cut out and non starting - without the working sensor the ECM will not allow the IT pump to work - when you try to start her does the rev counter move ? If not points to a failed crank sensor.

Thanks will try that.where is sensor situated and how easy is it to inspect/change?

It's on the bell housing just under the turbo and you can only get at it from under the car. Do the turnover test first to see if the rev counter moves .

thanks

have cranked engine a d rev counter not moving,is this definatley crank sensor?if so ill order one today.would that prevent petrol getting to engine though? or do have another prob?

Yes - if the ECM does not receive a signal from the crank sensor then it will not let the pump deliver fuel - as you report that the rev counter is not moving on cranking this indicates the crank sensor is not sending any signals - it is this sensor that gives the ECM the RPM data.
