OBD Protocols

I have a Rover 75 V8. and i am looking to buy an OBD2 scanner. Does anyone know what protocols the OBD2 port uses? Its a big ask i know but am grateful for any help/advice.
Sorry if i have put this in the wrong section i wasn't sure if it had to go in the V8 section but thought its more a technical question.

I don't know which protocol because on my V6 the software I'm using - Torque Pro on my phone - is detecting it automatically!
What kind of software do you intend to use and where (laptop / phone)?

can't remember which protocol the 260 uses, but i've been testing out a load of OBD2 scanners lately and everyone of them talked to my 260 to varying degrees, mostly to the motor and one 150 quid one also did the ABS a bit .

but its not ISO9141-2 as that s the CDTi :duh:

I was only looking to try a cheap hand held scanner, not intending to spend a lot. I had heard about Torque Pro and i was considering that also. i understand it can work on a tablet. Is the software a free app?

thank you both for your response its much appreciated.

You may try Torque which is a free app and Torque Pro is available (some more functions) for peanuts: around £7 once and that's it: why doing without then?
BTW another app is even far more powerful and even cheaper: free TOAF mobile, but at the moment it needs to be connected with a wire to the OBD. No Bluetooth yet available.
