I'm in a quandary
 
I'm in a bit of a quandary - I need a Tourer. I've seen two completely different ones I like but there just seem to be a lot of variables to consider so it'd be good to bounce off some ideas:

The first is a 75 diesel - literally the Tourer version of my saloon with the wooden dash, wheel etc. As we all know 45-50mpg but I'm worried about clean air zones. I don't travel that much in and out of city centres but I'd hate to be in a position where nipping over to Liverpool, Manchester, Wigan perhaps even Warrington where we like to go shopping and have a coffee might in a couple of years end up costing me. And I'm worried it's the thin end of the wedge - I'm from Liverpool and it's been reported for years that there are some areas outside the city centre (particularly along the old docks) that have some of the worst air pollution in the country. What's to stop them extending these zones, presumably with Govt backing and gusto in the march to drive diesels off the roads...

The second is a trophy blue MG ZT 180 just had the belts done and seems to have been well looked after. I couldn't run a 20mpg car so would be looking to fit LPG which is doable as the price is considerably lower vs the diesel. The E5 E10 game shouldn't impact me too much if I'm only using premium to get the engine warmed up.

Take the logic out of it and I prefer the diesel. I just love the facelift 75 - I think it has the right balance between cool and class and the wooden dash etc is just so much more pleasing to me than the MGs sporty look.

What do you do that needs a Tourer?

We do because of Quizzie our golden lab. We had a saloon when she was a pup but she had soon outgrown the back seat, particularly if you wanted a human to be sitting there :}. IMHO it's not quite as refined as the saloon (you can't isolate the noises as well because the whole of the interior is open rather than having a sealed off boot) but it's brilliantly practical.

Who knows what's going to happen in a couple of years time? But I’ll hazard a guess that it won't be good and will be expensive for the general motorist.

Go for what you'd like now and enjoy her while you can.

I know what you mean about the clean air zones and I am of the opinion I'll just go elsewhere or find a different method of travel, train or park and ride.

I think the MG sporty look is great.

whilst some may say nowt will stop the Government or councils extending or creating clean air zones, Southampton has for now, done away with the idea so nothing is guaranteed.

Both my cars a diesels and I think to avoid stress I just don't worry about clean air zones. To change my cars to something more modern will cost me money so perhaps paying to go into a clean air zone while using a car I like is the way to go

I've just swapped from a ZT-T diesel manual to a ZT-T 180 auto and just done a week in cornwall in the new car.

MPG - the diesel is certainly better, but not massively. 45-50mpg is certainly doable in a manual car, on a run, but running around town locally then the diesel never gets warm and I was seeing mid 30s MPG compared to the low 20s in the 180. My previous diesel auto would get low 30s MPG when used around town... obviously once on a steady run down the motorway the diesel is massively more ecconomical, but around town theres probably only 10mpg difference. The 180 is doing around 29/30mpg on a run, so 20mpg down on the diesel once cruising on the motorway. So it really depends on how you're going to be using the car.

Personaly I think the mk1 MG is the best looking car... here's mine together.

I'm going to view the petrol ZT this evening. There was a member on here who converted his 75 V6 to LPG - does anyone know who it is off the top of their head by chance? He mentioned in a couple of posts I've read over the years that it was fairly easy and he'd be happy to help anyone else giving it a go - wondering if he's still about? I can search for him if nobody knows... I've had LPG before on an old Jeep Cherokee and did a bit of work on a few bits but it'd be good to be in touch with someone who's done the job if I go down this route

Oh I saw that one - she's a beauty but the colour reminds me of a frock the wife wears at Christenings and you know those things are so excruciatingly boring I've become a Pavlovian dog and associated the two

I've fallen in love with the MG... The guy only had to fire her up and I was smitten with that V6 lol

BUT...

The right sill is doomed - the underside looks really good all over but that sill has gone badly around the rear jacking point and there's some slight paint bubbling on the outer part so will need the whole thing doing. How much am I looking at to get it done? The car is fantastic and seems to have been well looked after...
