Need a new PC...which brand should I go for?
 

My home PC performed its last task on monday...made a gastly screeching sound and refused to boot up....took it to the PC shop today only for them to condemn the tower....the hard drive is dead. the irony is it was a fujitsu siemens recommended by a PC whizz....this is the third time it has suffered a catastrophic failure....I dont rate it at all.

What I now need is a computer that DOESN'T crash, lose data, or disconect from the internet all the time.

I am tempted by the DELL series having had a decent trouble free spell with a previous DELL latitude laptop.

So....which brand should I gor for...and Laptop or Tower?

Probably the same siemens who make our radiator fans, my laptop is a toshiba 3 years old now and going brilliantly, never had any problems with it and it is running every day or was running everyday until I bought myself a new desktop, unfortunately not a recognised name because I had it built, but so far superb.

Buy a new hardrive (about 30 quid) easy to install and then just reinstall windows on it or get a mate to do it. Any new PC is as good as any other in my experience (I build my own and it's all down to processor speed, RAM etc) It just depends what you want to use it for but if it's just the basics then pick one up from PC world for about 3 to 400 quid, don't worry about the brand just look for the Intel logo on the case (it's the CPU speed which is important) and they are all pretty fast these days - good luck

No such thing. (and that includes Apples, as they are now more or less the same as a high end PC, the only difference now is the OS)

Dell are ok, as are home made ones, but just how old was your old one? As mentioned already, sticking a new hard drive in would cure that problem (unless of course there was a motherboard/PSU problem that caused the failure in the first place)

Data loss is a sign of an impending hard drive crash, disconnecting from the internet is not always a computer problem, (there are many reasons for that) and without seeing the PC first hand I am not going to speculate on it, but random crashing also can signify a dodgy hard drive or even be as simple as a badly installed OS and drivers.

It seems daft to kill off an otherwise fine PC because of a dodgy drive, but get the ram checked out as well.

My hard drive packed up a few months ago and I went to PC world for a replacement PC... However, after talking to an ex student of mine who works there, I purchased a new hard drive instead for about £35. No problems now and a lot cheaper than a new PC.

My PC is about 8 years old and was running Win98. I took the plunge and bought another HD of ebay (£19.99 inc p&p) and put XP on it.

After a bit of mucking about with the service packs, it's all running fine.

There are some good deals on PC's at the moment, but I couldn't see the point of spending £300 and consigning a perfectly good PC to the skip.

I can recomend a Toshiba laptop. Had mine for a year now, no problems so far,
Mine has built in wireless connection and Windows Vista [works great or me]
Cost about £399.
