rover 75 rear upper supension arm
 

hi to all
had the mot yesterday and it failed on the rear upper suspension arms I have had a look and three bolts are easily to remove but I cannot see how to remove the bolt that bolts the arm to the subframe can anyone help and what size socket will I need

This THREAD may help you.;) The PDF in post 5 should answer most of any questions.

The bolt requires a 15mm socket and a short, short extension.
Follow the upper arm to the sub frame, then look at the edge of the sub frame that faces the front of the car. There is a round hole, you get at the bolt via this hole


Warning, these bolts have a history of forcing the captive nut to turn which means it is a sub frame off job.

Forgot to mention to spray all attachments liberally with plus gas or similar i advance of "trying" the hidden bolt. There is a slight depression in the top/side of the subframe which leads to the captive nut, through which you can spray with easing fluid, using the straw attachment. Access is from under the car at the front of the subframe using a six sided socket and short extension (and/or a flexi drive). I used a very long breaker bar but access is limited to a part turn only. Don't attempt to use a 12 point or it may slip and then you are banjaxed! If that fails, it's a subframe off job!:eek:

This pic might help - it's the rear subframe as seen from the front (imagine you're the fuel tank). The upper arm bolt heads are in those two holes.

As others have said, you'll need a short 1/2" extension - this one will do it. The two bolt heads you can see are the lower arm bolts.

Here are the 2 captive nuts, as viewed from above (imagine you're the car floor). Give them a really good soaking with Plusgas before attempting to undo the bolts, otherwise you risk them spinning. If that happens it's a subframe off job.

thanks to all for their help I have sprayed with wd40 but I could not see the captive nut with the photos posted I can now look to see if I can see where to spray the captive nut with wd40

update jacked up the car and had a look to see where the captive nut was located I could get my hand between the body and the subframe and I could feel the captive nut so I was able to spray the captive nut with wd40 so we will see if It works

WD 40 tends to be just Water Dispersal. try to get some plusgas in there ;)
When you come to remove the bolts work them back a forth as soon as you feel it start to tighten up again, take your time and take it easy.
