Starting problem

I done a stupid thing the other day. I have a 1.8 conn 2006 since January, So I am still discovering the workings off the car. It has been starting and running perfectly, until I thought I would check out the interior fuse box. Being a large person, it is pretty difficult getting into it. I pulled out a fuse at random, just to have a look. Looked okay, so I put it back. Later getting in to drive the car, I turned the key. Nothing, turned it again, a big grinding noise. Not starting. i realised straight away, it must be the fuse I took out. And, I had put it in the wrong place. Rectified, the car started. I drove home.
i looked, when I was home that I had taken out the fuse for the Engine Management system.
Now, sometimes it does not connect when I turn the key or I get the grinding noise. Or, I have put it in third gear and turned the ignition and it starts.
How stupid am I:duh:. Have I damaged the solenoid/ starter?

Hiya, no you haven’t done any damage by removing the fuse, I’d say it’s a coincidence with a failing starter motor by the sound of things.

If possible don't start it until you've removed the starter motor and looked at the gear on the end. --- If you carry on and that's the trouble you might ruin the teeth on the engine flywheel which will ( at great cost. ) mean taking off the gear box.---:eek::eek:

Bryan,

The big grinding noise which you report suggests that there's a problem with the pre-engagement of your starter motor. It probably needs new solenoid contacts and they cost about £16. I've done this job myself. Are you DIY minded?

Yes, I am Simon. Now the next question is, Where would I buy the solenoid contacts? I live in Ireland.
