Has to be a first time
Taking my 90 year old dad to a hospital appointment this afternoon . And nasty smell a whining noise and when I stopped. Smoke from under the bonnet.:duh:
First time in 14 years the dizzle has had problem whilst on the move. Alternator it seems . Managed to get dad to hospital via daughter's cmax, and went home 14 miles amidst lotsa of noise and smoke & red light only came on 2 miles from the house Mgr stuff just don't last ;) only 16 yrs and 156 k miles . Bet any replacement won't get near that. |
Any recommendations for a unit with more than a 12 months pointless warranty :D ..

Which of your four cars is this Chris? Let me guess .... the diesel?

Usually smoking is the regulator - you can replace this by itself:

yup ... :duh: rarely had anything go wrong with any of the Zeds well apart from the 1.8 ;)

Will have it off ( the alt :D ) today hopefully for a looksee, have got another used one lying about .. so could make a working one out of the two with maybe a new reg. but will check the rings first.
Did look like the smoke was coming from the front tho' unless its the front pulley , thats been under scrutiny for some while , but thats not rattling yet ;) C Quote:

My regulator gave up the ghost in a cloud of smoke too - 20,000 later and she's still going with a new reg :)

Not being a diesel owner, isn't the problem that engine oil can easily be spilt on the alternator during an oil change? Simon |

The petrol models tend to have a much lower running power requirement, and thus less load on the alternator. :) |
Spent a couple hour in the wind N rain today .. to swap over the rectifier pack..
and .... No difference. The alternator does look a bit wet and oily , seem theres been a tiny weep from a Power steering pipe. so standard stuff :duh:.. Currently attempting the thro' the top method although got wheel and liner outa the away as well . But in between the weather, really struggling to get at the Power steering bolts .:duh:. Inside at the mo as its piddling down and really windy  C |
