The cost of moving
wow just had a shock on how much it costs to move. I know the cost depends on selling and buying price but with stamp duty and VAT it all mounts up.
You pay VAT on the charges you pay when selling and then get screwed again by paying stamp duty and VAT on charges on the purchase. Perhaps not so bad if you buy cheaper then you sell but buying equal or more expensive.... shock I'm not sure how fluid the hosing market is but if a bit slow/stagnant, stamp duty and or VAT being reduced may make a difference. macafee2 |

But you’ve got a nice place, Julien, with lots of room for all those Rovers......

I hate to think how much removal costs are for 200 miles with them packing.
oh just the thought of emptying my garage is a nightmare. I wonder if I'd hire a long wheel base van for that and do that myself. I've heard it said it is cheaper to extend then move. macafee2 |
The last time I moved I hired a 7.5 tonne truck, got 3 mates to take a day off and it surprised all of us how smoothly it went. No breakages and we were all eating Pizza and having a few beers at 6pm amongst the boxes in my ''new house''.
I had been quoted £1800 so well worth doing. |

Moved just before Christmas. Van and man for big stuff £180 and carried the rest to the new place by hand over the next 10 days. Mind you new house was only 13 doors away! Moved it using carrier bags. easy peasy!

To avoid confusion, we have several properties in 3 countries. Last November, we moved from North London to the outskirts of Bristol into a flat on the 4th floor (no lift). I used a professional company who had their own trucks... Luton vans/packing/blankets etc and breakages were insured. All of that was included.
Everything was moved in one day. They did the packing and unpacking, with reassembling of furniture. Nothing was scratched or damaged. The Costs: £1000 paid in cash. The quote was for 8 hours including mileage. I had a discount of 10% for paying in cash, well it all helps. Anything over 8 hours, the costs start to escalate. I explained to the 2 movers if that happened, they would not get so much in tips. They worked through lunch and I was able to tip them £50 each. They were happy. |
In the process of building new bungalow and garage (or workshop / man cave:D).
Our current house going on the market next week  We have hired a storage facility (about the size of a single garage) and totally decluttered our house to make it more appealing to purchasers. Close to the completion date at the end of June we'll move all the smallish stuff to the new palce, put it in the garage if needs be. The big stuff will be done by us too (Brother and Dad who have access to vans and lorries in their work they can borrow). Its a pain to do but will cost nothing more that the diesel and a few fish suppers to sustain the troops on moving day. |
