Maf lifespan ?

Just wondering how many miles people are getting out of MAF sensors ,I noticed my MG CDTI was putting out black smoke under hard acceleration so tried unplugging the MAF sensor the smoke has stopped ,it accelerates better and ticks over way smoother the sensors only done about 30000 miles thinking of maybe trying the Ron box Pieberg set up

I have often wondered how often people clean them?

I had the box and pierberg set up on mine once apon a time. Big russ advised me to take it off, he explained that the T4 shows the fueling is a bit erratic with the pierberg maf.

I followed his advice and fitted a genuine bosch and a remap. It runs great, but i am tempted to clean the maf with the correct maf cleaner now and again.

Thats a point think I'll give it a dip in some isopropyl alcohol and see if that works

Cleaning the MAF will only help for a short time, if the MAF is past its best then only a new genuine Bosch one will do, as for mileage at lot depends on how good the car as been serviced ie how often the Air filter as been changed etc, i personally change mine every 12 months without fail.

Ron box will eventually damage the HPFP which is a lot most costly than a regular air filter and MAF ;)

I’ve always changed the filter every year too,just suprised its gone off so quick ,im sure its genuine Bosch too

Price of one maf would give you a mafless remap. With option of dual mapping the car also. I don't know why people keep them still.

Does a mafless remap eliminate the need for the maf to be changed then?

What is dual mapping?

My car has 145k on it now and the maf has never been changed as far as I am aware, the previous owner had the car from 3 years old and I got it in 2014.
The tickover is smooth and when I boot it there isn't any visible smoke, I do know that it has always been well serviced and since I have had it all filters including the pcv one are changed yearly.

Are there other symptoms of a failing maf?

A few years ago I did think mine was failing, slow to pull away until about 2k revs, so I unplugged it as described only for the EM light to come on, I had to go to a garage to have it reset.

Some people on here don't like the mafless maps :shrug:. I always recommend it if the MAF is faulty and people want more power :}. The only reason people normally get some smoke is because the car isn't running at its best, all you have to do is drop 1psi of boost and you'll get smoke if you're on the edge of the maximum poke. A freshly serviced car with a spotless inlet manifold and egr will give no smoke with a map :}

Can second that Jamie has mafless mapped my 75 211000miles and ZT 121000 miles with no clouds of smoke and both went through the MOT smoke test at 0.01
