Hi guys

We currently have no alarm or security system in our household. I have nagged my parents many times over it to get something fitted as I feel it is very important. They have always dismissed it.

Anyway, last night, someone broke into our shed in the garden and stole our lawnmower. They must of jumped over the back fence which isn't particularly hard to do. My dad left the shed door open so it was easy for them to get in and take it.

Anyway, it worries me that next time, it could be inside the house and I obviously wouldn't want that.

The other thing is that we have a small dog who sleeps downstairs so will an alarm system not trigger with any movement?

I want a good system but nothing overly expensive. CCTV is also an option. What do you suggest? Many thanks.

Alarm systems are ok but to be honest, a dog is the biggest deterrent as the burglars won't take a risk with the dog being either noisy or aggressive.

If you want an alarm, it's worth spending the money for a properly installed one as they're much less prone to false activations. You can also omit rooms that have pets in when set.
A cheaper option though is to fit dummy bell boxes with battery powered leds in so it looks to the opportunist thief like you have an alarm. :icon_lol:

Dog... as suggested... or Gravel... they hate the noise gravel makes

Burglar alarms can have pet friendly sensors fitted now and wireless which is good.. we had this installed

Like said Rav, you can't beat a dog for security. Perhaps a larger friend for your small dog is the answer!
We have gravel around our cottage and nobody can get near without us hearing, very simple but very effective :xmas-smiley-032:

cctv. need infra red to see at night. make sure it is not fitted so its vision runs parallel to a wall as the infra red will blind the camera at night. it "reflects" off the wall. some systems also cant look out of a window for similar reason, it reflects off the glass. place the recorder so it is not easily stolen.

Firstly take a good look around the property. Try and put yourself in the position of wanting to break in. Find the weak spots and deal with them, First lines of defence are secure gates and fences,(and good locks on shed that you actually use !!) good locks are important. Motion triggered outside lighting is the next step. As far as alarms go, yes dummy boxes can deter the opportunist but only to a small extent. Pets need not be a problem with systems but take a look at your passive security first.
