Heads up for possibel goodies
Hi all.
My neighbour is being "persuaded" by his SWMBO to have a serious look at "tidying" his garage. There's likely to be some (many!) things that may be up for grabs, none of them Rover 75 related but more engineering type stuff. Some will be having the long journey to my shed  :D. One that I already know about is a welder. Old fashioned, oil filled with serious cables etc. and welding rods that have been carefully stored. Apparently it can be used for hours and just shrugs it off - I'm not a welder, I know what it is but can't do it so it's all a bit like magic to me ;). There's a generator that attaches to tractor drive too. I'll post up details/photos as and when so watch this space :} |
A decent oil filled welder is hard to come by these days, I used them years ago and the give great results.

Here's the welder:

And a Durite battery charger. Not working and weighs a ton (but not as much as the hernia inducing welder ;))

It’s a shame but you’ll be lucky to get anyone to part with cash for the welder these days. 110a is just enough to run 2.4mm rods with some head room on duty cycle which is fine for small fabrication work but nothing more. The 180a versions were much more useful and therefore more desirable even today.
The problem is the modern inverter welders are very light, powerful and have decent duty cycles so they are much more attractive. A 200a inverter is light enough to pick up with one finger and will run 4mm rods (albeit not all day) but the weld they produce is as good as the old transformers because you’ve got so much more control and features like hot start or arc force control. My best advice to you is see if you can acquire it from your neighbour and have a play. Baby steps into the welding world |

Thanks for the info. I don't have the time or inclination to learn how to weld. Got more than enough to keep me occupied and then there's the jobs from SWMBO  :D. Sadly looking very likely that they'll be heading for the tip.:mad: |

Try freecycle? macafee2 |
i have one of those welders in the back of my garage, not used it for years....the difference between this and a mig is this will weld all day long and not keep shutting down because it needs a rest to cool like most migs.
downside is its more difficult to weld vertically than a mig. |
