Seans DD and Steering Wheel Controls
 

Hi all,

Next weekend I'll be mucking about with other dash parts and will need to take Seans DD unit out (I think its a WinCE type :o) to do the stuff I need to do. When I installed it about two years ago i didnt connect up the Steering Wheel Controls.

I did have a look through the threads but couldnt find a How-To to wire the Steering Wheel Control to the DD unit. Is there an idiots guide for this?

Hi Glenn,

There is no definitive guide as there are many variables depending on what's in the car.

If you are lucky you will have a yellow/green/blue connector in the car loom with two wires ( one blue/orange and one blue/purple ) coming from this connector.

If so and you have used the loom supplied with your double din it will have a red connector block and this plugs into the yellow/green/blue connector and that's your lot.

I'm going to guess however this is not the case or you would have connected it when you first installed the unit.

You may find the blue/orange and blue/purple wires in the grey iso plug in the car loom, if so you can splice into these once you have cut the two wires from the red connector on the radio loom ( usually green and black )
It does not matter which way round these are spliced but make sure you insulate the wires afterwards.

Lastly, if your car came factory fitted with the Kenwood radios then this is different again as these were not hard wired, instead they sent an infra red signal from the eyebrow to the Kenwood radio.
Behind the headunit is a box with a black sleeved loom coming from it.
You need to remove this box and in the sleeve you will find three wires.
One 12 volt wire, an earth and the steering wheel wire.
The black earth will connect to one of the wires cut from the red connector ( the black one for simplicity )
The 12 volt wire ( green/white ) you need to insulate so it does not touch anything.

The last wire ( blue/purple) you will connect to the other wire taken from the red connector.

Job done.

I remember the irnfa red connector and stuffing it behind the DD Unit and im pretty sure it was a Kenwood I removed.

It will be Saturday before I get in behind the unit

If you have an IR, then look at the link I posted, and then you need to remove the old IR sensor at the back, that is how I did mine, you then use the wires as per the photo

If you can wait until the weekend, then I can take some more photo of how it connects to the red connector supplied with the Win CE unit
