tow bar bolt issues **SORTED**

Hi all,

bought a towbar for my tourer, all covered in rust but not a problem as im getting it shotblasted and powder coated, then i get to the L brackets, the previous owner didnt try or couldnt get the bolts undone so has cut them off, iv'e tried getting mole grips on them, iv'e heated them up but still no joy, any advice at all? can you buy just the L brackets?

You'll need to use a pair of nuts as a stud extractor.

They look way too rusted into place to remove though. Worth a try at least.

If you heat the bolts up to red with a blowlamp and quench them with water they should remove with mole grips.
You wont be able to buy the brackets separate, could have them made but it would have been cheaper to buy a new towbar by the time you buy bolts etc as well.

I have to do that job on my dads towbar.. I think I will be grinding the nuts off the brackets and welding new ones on.

Could also drill them out and re tap the thread. Pity you don't live closer, I have all the gear.

Attach mole grips, heat around the thread to cherry red and twist the mole grips until the bolt moves. Take care! A vice to hold it all in would help.

thanks all, now done, followed Jakg's instructions and out they came, well almost, had to use mole grips on a couple.
