Check the backplates as these often rust and Scott at DMGRS do a set of plates complete with shoes

Take phot0s of the positions of the springs and other gubbins.
Use a good set of pliers to get the locking washers onto the pins.`
Use the brake shoes to pull the springs into place rather than trying to stretch the springs onto the shoes.
As below, get a set of pins from DMGRs.

remove the handbrake cable from the back plate and grease it before replacing.
undo the nut at the handbrake lever to help adjustment before reassembling.
check the surface of the drum to make sure it is not pitted
adjust both sides before putting the car on its wheels.

Fit TRW handbrake shoes if you can source a set. I struggled with a poor handbrake after fitting after market shoes . A post by Jules advised that TRW were the original fitment so once fitted , the handbrake nearly put me through the windscreen ! :icon_redface:

I found that if you loosen the handbrake adjuster nut ,the cables push out at the shoes causing difficulty in fitting the shoes against the backplate. I wait until the shoes are fitted and the disc is back on before loosening the nut then adjusting the shoes inside the drum first then the nut at the handbrake to get around 3 - 4 clicks. :xmas-smiley-008:

I fitted the E46 equivalent shoes........LINK

The slightly "beefed up" web of the BMW shoe seems to suit the ZT better than the original.

They are both 160mm diameter, and 20mm wide, and mount in the same holes, and accept the same ATE adjuster, and work a treat ;)

Hi Vaughn.
Add a set of these to your kit just in case the back plate shoe retaining hole as got a little bigger, put them in from the rear and the clip onto the shoe, much better than the original.
