Apex Wheel Condition

Test drove a 260 this morning and was concerned as to the condition of the wheels. They are Apex wheels with a sort of smoked finish and not only were they a little kerbed, the finish is flaking off the spokes. The car has done less than 10,000 miles and I am surprised that they require a refurb so soon.

Is this normal?

Quite a common problem I'm afraid, because of the poor finish to the back of the spokes. They aren't painted silver or have a good coat of laquer (if any at all). It happens on quite a few types of wheel, at the moment I'm refurbing two sets of 18" straights and there is corrosion to the back of the spokes on all of them. One set is so poor they have had to be completely stripped back to bare alloy.

yes, the finish on the apex alloys is very poor, many of the guys with apex's have had to have them refurbished

Daniel Alanson on 01932 355356 (Addlestone Surrey) £60. Did my Apex and was a perfect job.

Yes very normal the finish is truly awful you can even remove it if you scrub too hard as I found out trying to remove brake dust.

Fortunately other refurb companies seem to be able to a decent job even with black chrome

Hi Fleckers,
there is a place in Chelmsford that looks good. Lots of info. to judge it by on their web-site (http://www.clean-image.co.uk).
One place I have been recommended (by my tyre dealer) is Pristine wheels in Milton Keynes (http://www.pristinealloywheels.co.uk/).

I've no personal experience of either of them though.

These are very similar to the ones fitted to my wifes TF and i have to agree, black marks appear which you think could be tar or black spots of some sort -it is actually the paint coming off showing the original colour underneath which is black - the car has only covered 15000 miles.

I reckon too much polishing soon rubs it off. I am considering applying extra lacquer to mine but you cannot even cover up scuffs as no paint matches it!

having brought a second set of apexs which i had refurbished and are now fitted to my car, had the originals for a good while and still have some infact, but never had any trouble with them other than the idiot driver (me) kerbing them, never again tho.

I used to regularly pressure wash them and use wheel cleaner on them, and never had any problems. once cleaned inside and out of the wheel i often apply brake dust polish that stops it sticking to the wheel and use normal clear car polish on top of that for added protection against the effect of brake dust.
