I have a replacement key case but swapping the blade over seems daunting or maybe it's an age thing advice most welcome many thanks in advance.

I have the same problem. I was terrified of breaking it. :eek:

Boiling Water.
 

Once you have taken out the board, drop the key into a cup, and fill it up with boiling water from the kettle, let in soak for a while 3 minutes, then see if the metal part of the key comes out with the plastic end on it.

If not and the metal blade only come free, still don't worry as all you need to do is drift out the pin, do the same with the new blade and swap over the plastic end, then insert into the fob, maybe use a drop of super glue ;)

Use a small screwdriver blade to remove the rear of the fob.

Remember at all costs do not lose the most important part, the transponder.

In fact you can leave it in the back of the fob which you can clip back onto the front of the new fob.


I just found this old key blade so i could show how to get the blade out, sometimes it will come free with the plastic end other time just the metal blade.

Drop key into a cup.

Pour boiling water into the cup to cover the key.

Find a pair of pliers, not always needed as sometime the fob as gone soft enough to just use your hand to pull free the blade.

After about 3 minutes i did not wait that long:duh: remove fob from cup and try to pull the blade, if it does not want to move then repeat the above with boiling water for another 3 minutes.

The blade will come free either with the end or not in my case.

No need to worry though all you need to do is drift out the pin.

The pin will now need to pulled out with the pliers.

You can then drift out the pin on the new key blade.

which you then add the plastic end to your original blade and fit it into the new front fob maybe use a little super glue.

The hot water worked. The blade came out complete with the plastic end, so job done.

Very useful information ordered a couple of replacement fobs for mine yesterday will tackle the job much easier now :bowdown:

Beware some replacement cases come with stepped blades .
If you need to use the new plastic insert for the blade it will need to be altered so that a full thickness blade will fit ;)
