Wrynose & Hardknott Passes

Just been over the Wrynose & Hardknott Passes while on a brief holiday in The Lake District.

My word but they're roads where its best to have your wits about you!

One poor chap in a Peugeot managed to take a corner too tight and beach his car on a rock. Wished we'd had time to stay and see how they sorted that our but I suspect it took hours.

Before anyone asks we were in the better half's Yaris auto. Humble but possibly the perfect car for the job. Small (narrow & very busy roads) and simple :¬)
Suspect its brought forward the next brake service.

I love roads like that. They are the ones we seek out on the maps.
We have a list of places to go, these have been added :)

Downhills, select low gear.

Used to use the hard hardknot pass a lot when living near ulverston , great rd but a bit scary in the explorer ,on some of the bends you couldn't see the road

I remember going over there in a hired modeo, driving like a loon to get food at a hotel at Moor Row . I made it but fried the brakes on the car went passed Boot with smoke pouring from both front wheels!

We have done the Lake District passes a few times great fun. The road to Applecross in the north west highlands is another good one.

Toured Scotland in 09 for the sole purpose of doing Applecross while I was doing the North 500, or part of it, on my Yamaha 1300, unfortunately, it rained for 5 days solid:duh: never made it.
Here's the bike just entering Glen Coe after a fuel up at The Green Welly:cool:
BTW, after I got home, sold the bike and bought my 75:cool: first car in 20 odd years;)

I did, " the struggle", in my 1.8 a few years ago...never done so many gear changes, it's a challenge alright, had to have a coffee at the Kirkstone Inn afterwards, my left arm was aching, but the car did it.

Lots of respect for you guys that have done them on bikes. I wouldn't mind a stab at it on my old Red Hunter when its quiet. The thought of having to hold on the front brake if I needed to stop on a corner would definitely be a brown trousers moment....
