The Rover didn't return.
 

After 2 years of spannering in the garage I took my 75 to ATS for an MOT, which it failed on a few points. During the emission test I assume the cam belt slipped. (Its a new one I put on myself. Obviously Made a mistake somewhere.) The engine made some strange noises and stopped.
I now have to dilemma of what to do. Cut my losses and get scrap man to collect from ATS. Collect it myself and see where I went wrong or get a proper mechanic to collect it and fix it for mega bucks.
I'm leaning towards the scrap man, shame, but there it is. Your thoughts comments and opinions are welcomed.

I would at least collect the car and have a look to see what has happened, if the belt has gone then the worst case will be some bent valves.

All repairable if you have the time and patience.

As Andy has said get it home and have a look.

I agree it is better to get the car home and turn the whole experience into a lesson learned instead of either no car or an expensive bill. Once stripped down you can then price everything up and go from there. Good luck

Always a dilemma but if she goes for scrap what are you going to buy next? It sounds like you know her pretty well and have spent many hours with her so all the "usual" stuff is already sorted. And this is one of the best forums I've found :D.

I've used them a fair amount over the last 6-7 years with several different cars and found them to be decent, honest and reliable. Assuming it was the ATS by Morrisons and the BP garage he's about 1/2 mile away heading towards the M42/A444 island.

I agree with what's been said Adrian, get the car home and turn it into a learning experience. As you are equipped with tools and mechanical confidence, repairing your engine will be by far the most economic solution.

Beware of pessimistic assumptions though. They can often be surprisingly inaccurate. ;)

Don’t scrap it!

If it can’t be repaired then break it to try get some proper money back, rather than just pennies in comparison to what you’ve put in with the scrap man.

That way your car lives on and helps others!

If the car body is in good condition then you have to ask yourself 'how much would a replacement car cost? ' if you have time and a certain level of skill then overhaul the engine or buy a secondhand engine. Remember most of the repair time is given to removing and replacing the engine. The actual repair time when the engine is out is not that great. When I had to do this I refaced and ground in all the engine valves which was time consuming but brought the engine back to new performance! I would go for it.

Thank you guys your words have given me inspiration to continue. I think I was a little depressed when I said the scrap man could have it. Exploratory spannering will take place forthwith. I'll report back once I have some pros and cons :}
