Rover 75 KV6 automatic gearbox problem

This morning when engaging the gear D (and all the others) on the dashboard the letter "D" did not light up.
I turned the car off and on again and the "D" light came on correctly.
after about 10 minutes of travel, the warning light went out and the car went into protection mode.
I managed to get home.
I ran the diagnostics with the app Torque.
He reports 2 errors to me, P1641 and P1646.
By switching the car off and on several times, the letter "D" now lights up and the car is no longer in protection mode.
I searched the internet, but P1641 appears to refer to the fuel pump and P1646 appears not to exist on the Rover 75.
Thanks in advance to anyone who can help me.

The Torque application is perhaps too universal, try using TOAF which is more Rover specific.

This list (https://the75andztclub.co.uk/forum/s...d.php?p=228313) suggests a CAN bus fault which would make sense together with the loss of the D symbol.

Good luck

Thanks for your reply.

I've tried to install the app TOAF for android, I can connect the phone via usb and log in, but I don't get any data.
On facebook it seems that version 0.26 only works with wifi connection.

I have read the error codes and it actually looks like a can bus error.

Now I'm on vacation about 100 km from home.
I don't know whether to try to drive back or look for a mechanic here.

Besides, where I live, in Italy, there are no more mechanics for Rover.
Generic mechanics only.
Either I tell them what to do or they don't know what to do.

what could be causing a can bus error?

Not got around to using Toaf Android yet, I'm still using XP.

Try searching the forum for CAN bus faults and you get results like this one

I believe this problem is often related to wet inside the car (yes I know it hasn't rained there for months) but have you had any problems with water in the boot or cabin, has the car got a sunroof?

As the Rover 75 shares much of its electronics with BMW, perhaps a BMW garage could be worth speaking to.

Good luck

I had no problems with flooding in the car.
Rather I'm on vacation and I left the car parked in the sun for 5 days.
I saw that the gearbox control unit is under the passenger's feet. I thought I'd try cleaning the contacts. Even those of the ECU in the hood.
The car goes. I thought that not receiving the signal of the engaged gear it does not display anything on the dashboard and the ECU goes into protection.

Whatever happens, do you think I can travel 100 km to get home and take the car to my mechanic?

Sorry but again, does the car have a sunroof? You might not have seen wet but the carpet can hold an enormous amount before it becomes noticeable. Sunroof drains are notorious for leaks but information on here suggests remedies.

As to your journey home, I dare not speculate, 100km isn’t far but if I were doubtful I’d take a non-motorway route home with plenty of places to stop.

If you have Toaf on a PC, try and connect to all modules, any lack of communication could indicate a fault with that unit. And have a word with your local BMW outlet.

Regards

Thanks again for your reply.
The car haven't a sunroof.
I felt and the carpet is perfectly dry.
I looked at the ECU housing in the hood and there is no water.

At home I have an old laptop with win xp, I will try to install toaf for windows.

I will definitely not take a motorway route. :}

I found on the internet the toaf android version 0.22.
I installed it on a tablet and it works. :}
on some modules, however, it does not give me results.
JATCO (automatic gearbox), CC (cruise control V6) and SMAC (electric seats)
My car is one of the first ones from 1999.
Reading the errors of the IPK module I have some errors.

8D - ATS signal: telegram error or no telegram
F8 - No CAN bus ID - DME4
FB - No CAN bus ID - EGS1
F6 - No CAN bus ID - DME1
F7 - No CAN bus ID - DME2

I read on a BMW forum about a CANBUS communication problem.
I don't know if they are old or recent errors.
Now I have tried deleting them to see if they reoccur.

Isn't it that someone can give me advice on which module to check? ;)

Great that you’ve got Toaf working (and presumably got home:}) and it reports CAN bus errors. I believe the EGS1 relates to the gearbox connection and the others the main ECU (or EMU), trouble is it mean little to me, might as well be Greek (or Italian).

Try reading through previous posts, like the one I linked to. I’ve not had this kind of problem but remembering old posts they had to identify the CAN bus header and trace backwards. As these errors are all in BMW speak try your local BMW agent.

Good luck

When the D failed to light up did EP show up instead or was the display blank?
