Front tyre wear
Hi all.
What would cause my front left tyre to wear on the inner edge and my front right to wear on the outer edge on my 2005 cdti on 17 inch wheels? Thanks Pete. |
Tracking out or worn suspension/joints.;)

All the front suspension is nice and tight, nothing is worn.
I always thought that when the tracking is out, they either both wear on the inside, or both wear on the outside. Not one of each. |

Tracking is independently adjustable on each of the front wheels so both can be out relatively to the rears or vice versa.

Agreed on the rear wheel tracking being the likely culprit. The thrust angle is the first thing any tracking session must check. This is adjusted through the rear wheel toe settings. That done, the fronts are then set against the rears. This prevents 'crabbing' and the sort of front tyre wear you describe.
EDIT: This diagram shows how the rears control front tyre wear by forcing the car to crab off-line. https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/TH...-no?authuser=0 These rear toes put the thrust angle out of spec. TC |
