Not a good start really........

........Yesterday myself and Mrs MB went car shopping.

Lat weekend we had arranged to test drive a 2 litre manual Cooper S 5 door hatch, and had a long conversation with the salesman about my wife's aversion to automatic cars.

So yesterday, up we go to the Mini dealership, and the salesman proceeds to bring us the test car.

Chris opened the door, then shut it immediately, I wanders over, sure enough an automatic :duh:

I said to the salesman, we don't want an auto, my wife wants a manual car...his reply "the autos are nice and everyone wants one after a test drive", to which I reiterate
"she wants a manual".

His reply "well you are here now, why don't you take it for a test drive"....OK I replied, but this car is not for me, it's for my wife.

On the road, it's fairly ok in the built up areas, and he directs me to a stretch of open road, now it should be noted I'm diving like miss Daisy up to this point, but one I hit the open road I planted my foot into the carpet.

The result of this 189 BHP car was to make lots of noise, nothing else for about five seconds while it decided what to do :getmecoat:

I asked the salesman if this was normal, his reply "you should use sports mode" so I pulled over to fathom out the quite frankly non intuitive driving controls, and selected sport mode.......well what can I say !!! disappointing :getmecoat:

So on our return to the dealership, I gave the salesman the key and said our goodbyes, as we were heading up to the Honda dealer to look at a new Civic......desperate to hold out for a sale, the salesman said "wait a minute, I'll see if I can sort out a manual for your wife to drive"

A few minutes later, out he comes with a 14 plate Cooper s 2 ltr manual 3 door hatch, wheel arch trims missing, bumped and scratched with 40,000 miles on the clock.......I said what is this then, one previous careless lady vicar owner?

So Chris got to drive this time, liked the car (despite the brakes banging as there was so much rust on the discs) so after the same journey, back to the showroom.

The specification she wanted was the comfort plus pack, with Solaris Orange paint, so based upon the spec she wanted, a factory order car came in at a shade over 27K.

Salesman then proceeds to try and sell her a "similar" spec car from another branch, in grey, of one in silver, to which I replied "it's a girls prerogative to choose a new car in a pretty colour, and primer with lacquer applied over the top is not pretty"

The result, no sale, but as it happens I've found a better specced one in a dealer down south, registered on an 18 plate with 560 miles on the clock for 19K.

The blue is nice, and I'm sure Chris is going to enjoy her new car :drool4:

Nice colour blue.

You would never have lived down buying a new “primertalic” car .

coolguy 25th August 2019 12:47

Love automatics, but hate the CVT box in the Mini. It has a poor reputation for reliability as well!

planenut 25th August 2019 14:39

Do you think they will ask you both for "feedback" on the salesman?

Hi Steve, different orange, and I don't want a diesel for her as she doesn't do a lot of miles these days.

This is Solaris Orange.....

As opposed to this, which is a solid colour, and looks like British Leyland "Bracken"

She like the blue one though :D

Just buy the Honda! I bought my daughter an 03 Civic many years ago. She has bought a Volvo since but as she still liked the Civic, they kept it as a spare. It's been used and abused by most of both families but it keeps on passing its MOT by only needing the odd small repair/replacement. It refuses to die!!!! I prepared it for MOT (wiper blade and wheel bearing). The build quality is just far and away better than the competition and the engine and box are as sweet as. It's survived several learner drivers, many house moves, holiday treks and "courtesy car" experiences. If ever the Rover ......................................... you know! I know what I will be buying next!:getmecoat:

The F56 has a different box compared to R50/R56. Statement on auto boxes Bit like HGF they all do that.

My son picked up up a R50 auto recently for peanuts that the owner was convinced the the gearbox was broken. After resetting the adaptions car is working perfectly and now years ticket on car, what a bargain. For a 2002 vehicle I have never seen such a clean car underneath.

Blue is a really nice colour, and those orange colours are poles apart :o I should have known really as my FL2 is tambora flame as opposed to the orange they have on the defender.

I am sure your good lady will enjoy the car good luck ;)

timon 26th August 2019 08:08

You're sure you want one of these? These cars aren't know for their reliability. Some versions are assembled over here in the Netherlands with production stagnating for good reasons...

sworks 26th August 2019 08:59

Nice car, I hope Chris enjoys her ‘mini adventure’ (see what I did there) Petrol is definitely the way to go. As much as we disliked the issues with the Paceman it was all diesel related. A petrol clubman was second choice as a replacement for the MG

I wouldn’t worry, Brian has been repairing Rovers for long enough, a new mini can’t be worse than that!

Hmm, unreliable ? :duh:

From the UK's leading consumer magazine. Perhaps I'm biased as I have three (R50,R56,F56) in the family and not one of them has let anyone down even the oldest one (2002) model has many years left on it.

Thanks for boosting our economy, no complaints here! There just was a recall for timing chains wearing out way too fast and there are many known electrical problems. The latter aren't much of a problem though and maybe you've been lucky.

All three cars in family are made in UK not Cloggy land :} Designed, Engineered and Built in UK with probably lots of bits from all around the world and the UK, but nothing new there.

My family model years cars 2002, 2007, 2019 so a fair sample I would say. However I assume the consumer magazine has a much larger sample to give the facts on the high reliability rather than my statistically low number of 3 sample rate or your hearsay.

Clogs

I've never owned a Mini, so I also have to base what I know on the articles the RAC and co. write. Until today I actually was unaware there had been a recall for the timing chains so those people with broken engines seem to have been negligent... -1 to me it seems.

NB
Got to love Google... All I see now is Mini advertisements.
