Rover 75 air con not working
 

Hi all,
My w reg r75 air con does not work. Thinking it could be out of gas (gased it last summer)
Took to garage they checked it and told me gas is OK but the reason it is not working is the compressor is not engaging. Ask how much, told £700. I hope there is a less expensive way.
Any help will be great thank you

I would PM the traders on the Forum here (e.g. Mickyboy - others are available) to see what they have. The second hand route will be significantly cheaper.

I would also ensure that you fan is working correctly, by using the ‘demist’ test. After a With with mine I discovered that the fan was not working, resolved that along with a re-gas and now have very cold Aircon.

Two (or three) possibilities seem clear. The garage is trying to sell you a very expensive fix, or the trinary switch has failed. The trinary switch trips the compressor pulley clutch if there's the correct gas pressure to run the aircon system. If the garage is saying the pressure is OK, then the trinary should be tripping the clutch to run the compressor. Do you hear the clutch click/clunk when you turn on the aircon?


If you don't see/hear the clutch switching on, then either the clutch (or the wiring) has failed or trinary itself has failed - or the system simply needs a recharge.

I agree with the last two posts. What your garage should do next is check that +12v is reaching the compressor clutch, not threaten you with a £700 bill. :o

I'd be very surprised if the trinary switch is faulty; it's unheard of.

See if you have an independent mobile air con. specialist in your area. They're a much better bet than garages.

The air con on my X-plate 2.5 stopped blowing cold. "Needs a re-gas", I thought so went and got one. This worked fine for a few days after which it reverted to its previous lukewarm state. I carried out all the tests recommended on here and could find nothing wrong. I finally took it to a local mechanic on the recommendation of the chap that does my MOTs. He discovered a tiny hole in the condenser that barely showed up on a dye test. Test, replace parts as required, re-gas and replace a dodgy coolant hose he discovered while he was in there: £420.
