2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee
 

I’m going to view a grand Cherokee 2.7 crd . Anyone have one ? Anything particular I have to look for ? Are they reliable enough?

Alarms, security that won't let you in or start the engine are worth keeping an eye open for, judging by the talk on the Jeep forums. :shrug: I looked at a five year old, low miles one that had been back and forth to the dealers until the warranty ran out. It was being sold as a non-runner as the owner had parked it and the demons had struck again!!!

I had a Cherokee diesel which was as thirsty as the 4.0 petrol

I had one as a Hire car in USA last year and returned it within two days as the immobiliser kept playing up . 2nd one was OK for a week until it developed an oil leak. Swapped it for a Ford which was OK

I had an old thirsty 4.0 on lpg. Considering the size of it, there wasn't much room in the boot and it didn't even have a cup holder

A bloke at works got 1, reckons it's great towing the caravan, mpg is so bad anyway that it makes little difference when towing. But he also says that he gets worried if he's not fixed something on it in the last month (or words to that effect, filter on here won't let me put what he actually says). But having said that, he loves it and has had it about 3 years now and doesn't seem to be thinking about changing. He had a mundano before that.

Check around the base of each injector for an oily black residue, the seals are known for needing replacement.
Also check for blueish white smoke at the rear on tickover, or a strong smell of diesel fumes. If 5 injectors need replacing it will cost ££££s.

My wife has had a 2012 JGC limited plus, auto diesel, since February this year. She loves it.
It has the different 3.0 V6 (Italian) engine though.
Yes, it’s thirsty, with a recorded 28-32 mpg driving locally.
For constant 100 mile journey, this rose to 44mpg. (Not checked by brim to brim).
She chose this over BMW X5, Audi Q7, Volvo XC90, Kia sorrento, Skoda codiaq, Nissan quashquai 2, Honda CR-V, Hyundai Santa Fe, primarily on boot space. Level of features and comfort were 2nd level criteria.
Ok, not for me due to size and mpg, but then again, I don’t have to lug around the boxes of stuff that she does, for her work as an interior designer.
I had already warned her that:
- i could probably buy a mint 75, for what she will pay for a set of tyres.
- I could probably buy 3 mint 75’s for what it’ll depreciate in a year, every year for 6 years.
- it would make more sense to buy a 75 with a trailer!

Had a few Cherokees usually the 4 l version, diffs made from chocolate, the diesel variant can have injector problems. Just got a VW toureg or tow rag as the wife calls it v6 diesel 2.5. Did look at a Jeep a few years back with the iti engine..I loved owning mine but every now and again you need to get it on gravel and spin the wheels to unwind the diff..nice to drive.

Water pumps cost a fortune to replace, my mate who runs a workshop had one in recently with that engine and he reckoned it was a devil of a job from beginning to end. I am sure he said the final bill was near on £1k.
