Key cutting issue!

Done the 'Right' thing and tried to get a key cut so I had a spare in case I lose my only one.
Used my usual guy, spent all day walking around town waiting for the call to say it's done, but noooo, the 75 isn't playing ball! Again!
Anyway, short version, he rang up to say they can't code it as there is an issue with the car. He showed me when I got to his garage.
He plugged in his coding equipment, and when he selects 'Keys cut' he said it should tell him which 'slot' of five my original is programmed in. The readout displayed error, not complete.
He explained he can try and code he new one and guess which of the five positions to pick. He said if he picks the one that my key is programmed on, it will wipe out my old key and replace it with my new one, leaving me still with one key and £150 lighter.
I said go for it, he suggested position 5, but it didn't work and wouldn't allow the new key to be programmed.
He said there is a fault with the car or ECU because it isn't allowing a new key to be programmed?
At least I didn't have to pay for the new key as he can re use it I assume as it hadn't been cut yet.
So, where can I go from here?
Will BMW have any joy?
He asked me if there is any more documents with the car, and all I have is the cars key code number.

You need to see one of the specialists on the forum. No doubt someone will be along shortly. Key cutting is one thing but the programming of the fobs, needs the specialist equipment and parts off your motor to do it.

What's he trying to code? The remote board or transponder, or both? If it's the remote board then you can do it yourself with Toaf (use the search) no need to remove anything. Otherwise contact your nearest T4 trader.

I'm trying to get an extra spare key, with fully working fob.
All I have is my one working one.
The bloke I have always used tried but couldn't do it as when he plugged his equipment into my cars OBD port under the dash, my car wouldn't communicate with his coding system.
He showed me.
When he tried to code his new key, it just said error, so he couldn't finish it.
He thinks there is a fault with my cars ECU or locking system.
He says you can have five keys at once coded to the car, and when he tried to select slot 5, it would send it, so car wouldn't recognize the new key.
I'm trying the BMW route as I do have my cars spare key code in my paperwork.

If you fancy a trip to Bungay, I can find out which key slot your key is coded to, and then release the other slots for you.

Wow, that's great thanks.
But I wonder if you will have the same issue when you plug into my car?
When could I come to you please.
