A safe and happy St. George's day to all. Mine is the only unfurled flag in the avenue. Poetically, I live at the top of the road.

That well known Turkish knight

I have a leftie mate like you who spouts this same old sad mantra:mad: So what? On St Patrick's day, do you advise our Irish friends that he wasn't Irish, but a Romano-Brit? Or does that not fit your remit:getmecoat:
Oh, & he never buys a round, tight as, but good at spending other peoples money.

His only connection to Turkey was that he was born in Cappadocia which was part of the Roman Empire but is now part of Turkey.

His parents were Christian and his mother came from Palestine.

He suffered persecution for being a Christian by the then Emperor of Rome and George refused to abandon his religion. This resulted in his being beheaded. But not before he had freed all his slaves and given his wealth to the poor.

As an example of a person who defended his beliefs, helped the poor and stood up for what he thought was right, his reputation spread widely.

History is far more than a sound bite ......

Well I don't care what anyone says. I am English and proud of it, just a pity that this thread isn't full of us English folk celebrating our day.
