Hi. I'm in need of a new clutch for my 2003 CDTi 75 Tourer. I have been quoted £760.00 and wonder if those on this Forum think this is reasonable or if not can anyone recommend a garage to do the job.

Spend a day out in Norfolk, and drop Trikey a pm , good price and someone who knows what they are doing

I was estimated £800 by a small, local ex-Rover garage, now just a local, respected mechanic, including DMF, and £600 by another, excluding DMF. I decided to do it myself - no DMF needed.

£760 sounds way over the top to me. :eek:

There's a guy in Derby doing them for £350 I think it was - not sure how much he charges normally but he posted in a Rover FB group its an offer to celebrate bigger, new premises. Marshall Performance Motors I think its called. Lates is excellent too, he did my belts and service, but no idea of his clutch prices. Same for Trikey. :)

Its a 5 man hour job plus the kit - MGR DMF's have a very good reputation - so i would go for a 3 piece clutch kit - clutch plates and slave - i would get a LUK kit - say 200-250 plus labour. Now where i live my garage charges £40.00 per hour plus vat - so labour £240 plus parts ( which i buy) £200-250 - so £440 to £490 - - i suspect as you are in the South the hourly labour rate is much higher than in these parts.

I wish I could do it in 5 hours. I doubt I'd get the car apart in 5 hours.
please bear in mind there is a bolt each side that can and often does seize.
Whilst people often mention the master, slave and clutch there are other parts that are recommended to be changed at the same time. It is each to their own if they change them or not. How vital it is to change these other parts I have no idea and so because I don't know, I changed them.
£750 is higher then I have seen mentioned before, £650 but I thought Trikey offered to do the job for £500'ish. With his knowledge I would say he is a safe bet

People who are practised at clutches can do it a lot quicker than 5 hours. Having had the slave changed on mine it was all swapped in less than 2 hours, and that wasn't with them rushing! It was quite interesting to see how it all comes apart.

And before anyone says anything, the slave had gone noisy (metal slave) and the AP clutch had done around 1K miles, so that's why the clutch itself wasn't replaced. But when you change the slave if it's a worn clutch you might as well swap it as it's only a couple extra bolts.

Dont forget the 5 hours is predicated on 2 men x 2.5 hours - i bet most garages will quote 4-5 hours - saying that i have seen Andy Willi do it on his own in 2-3 hours.
