rear light seals

I feel sure that this has probably been covered before, but yesterday I changed my rear light seals to try to solve a water leak in the boot. When I took the old seals off, they both appeared to have been cut near the outer corners. It appears not to be random (ie same place on each side) and on closer inspection does seem to be cut (ie not ripped).

So obviously not a perfect seal, and a contributory factor to my leak.

Is it usual to see the seals cut like this?

The new ones (from Jezzer1 on here - thank you) do not have this cut.

[ Incidentally, I also sealed the inside of the chrome waist trims, and so far, with some recent rain and a hosepipe test, it all seems to be dry now. Next job is to replace the hardboard boot floor (which had become soggy) with new plywood. ]

Use marine ply for the boot floor. Three coats of outdoor varnish. Job done.

yes, marine ply bought yesterday, to be cut to shape and holes drilled shortly, and painting as soon as we get a dry and not to cold day

Yes - the originals have a cut.

Agreed, certainly a case of where replacement parts available are better than the originals

How bizarre. Why would they have been made in this way?

They weren't, it's a seam which fails over time. I simply reglued mine together & so far, 9 years, been good:cool:

That's correct, I've always found contact adhesive on the joint does the trick.

Believe it or not, it was (and is) slightly cheaper to produce the seals with the joint in them. So, of course, MG Rover went for it, little knowing the warranty problems that were to come as the bonded joints failed.

I had a new tool laid down to produce the seals without the joint, so there should be no weak point to fail in the future. Just leaves all the other water ingress points to seal now :icon_rolleyes:>
