rover 75 cdti turbo
hi to all
this morning i took the pipe that goes from the turbo to the intercooler and there was some oil there how can i test the turbo to tell if the seals are leaking i cleaned the system a few weeks ago, the engine has done 100,000 miles and is there a company that can rebuild the turbo or is a new turbo still available david |
They all by pass a bit of oil over time, but if the level is dropping on the dipstick and you are having to top it back up then the seals may have worn. Usually these turbos are pretty much bulletproof, so if you need one then far cheaper to buy used.
I have one that has covered over 410k miles and still going strong on the original seals. |
The turbo is so reliable I think I’ve only ever sold 2 in all the years, I’ve got a few in my stores tho

As above i have never heard of a turbo on our cars fail.

hello trickey
you say that you have changed a turbo on the 75 could you tell me how you did the job i have had a look and the 2 front bolts are accessible but the back bolt will be difficult how did you get at these bolts i have spoken to a turbo specialist and he told me to check the crank case breather and the oil return on the turbo for blockage the crank case breather is ok so i now need to check the oil return if both are ok he told me that the oil seal was at fault he gave me a price for the repair of £195-£300 but i have been looking on the internet and i found a company in LATVIA and they have several new old stock for £250 david |

The three bolts that hold the turbo to the manifold are accessed by removing the air filter, then remove the three rubber grommets, then slide the awful tin cover out of the way, you will then see the three bolts. You will find it easier when refitting to have an extra pair of hands to line up the turbo while the other person locates a couple of bolts, its a bit fiddly to get the turbo and a new gasket lined up from underneath. |
