Good fit

The 74mm 15 flute version of this (see dropdown) fits oil filter LPW100161. Hurrah!

NB. There's a 74/76mm stepped version too - it would probably be ok but I haven't tried it.

To be fair, I've got something along these lines.......LINK

....... I've had it for years now, and I've yet to encounter a problem using it

Pah, all you posh folk out there!

:p:

I very nearly for the first time resorted to this with my mother's car. A Clio. The oil filter is more or less the same distance from the subframe as the thickness of my chain wrench! My nylon strap wrench just slips on it! What was left of my knuckles said 'get the hammer!'

(jack the engine up slightly worked instead lol)

I looked at both of those types first and was about to buy a 3-leg tool from Amazon when I stumbled across the 15 flute cup.

It's actually possible to get the filter off by hand but it's bit of a faff. Give it a friendly sideways tap with a club hammer (on the corner), then push hard upwards with the palm of one hand and turn with the fingers. At the same time feed the other hand through the wheel arch liner to get more fingers on it. Keep doing this in bursts and it just starts to turn a fraction of a millimetre at a time. The fractions become larger after a while and eventually it'll come off. By this time you're knackered and you've got a dislocated arm (the wheel arch one) - so I bought the 15 flute cup. :D

I've used the hammer & screwdriver method before. Sometimes it works and sometimes it just rips gashes in the casing without turning the filter (then you've got tetanus plus engine oil up your sleeve :D).

I have a couple of the tools to remove the petrol oil filter, both work equally as good

I was tempted by both of those types as well but wasn't sure there'd be enough room to get them on and aligned more or less horizontally. A chain wrench won't do it because the chain gets jammed between the sump wall and the filter (handle too long).

Here's the cup tool.

There's not much chance of it spinning without turning the filter - it's too good a fit.

Possibly the above tool with a nice neat hole in the undertray would save a lot of work?

Blink 7th June 2020 09:50

I've been thinking that too Dave. What about the sump plug though? The oil comes out horizontally the split second the plug leaves the thread, then the angle gradually reduces until it's vertical. The hole in the undertray would need to be big enough to accommodate the change.

The solution is one of these. Then it's just a case of: 1) remove undertray hole cover. 2) Stick your hand in and remove safety cap from drain valve. 3) Attach drain tube to valve - oil starts to flow down tube into your container. 4) Unscrew oil filter. 5) Go and have a cuppa while engine drains down.

See the video here- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L0T3FUQJB_w - his is slightly easier because the sump plug faces vertically downwards.

The hole in the undertray now only needs to be the diameter of the filter (call it 80mm) plus the width of your hand (say 100mm) = 180mm. I reckon a 180x100mm hole in the undertray would be big enough to get to the filter and the drain valve. All it needs then is a cover plate for the hole (plastic or aluminium sheet.) and some fixings.
