Thinking of taking the 75 to the Continent

Hi folks,

I am going on holiday this year to France and thinking of taking the 75, however with her getting on a bit I am worried that I will constantly be thinking somethings going to happen reliability wise. I live just outside Edinburgh so the overall trip will be about 1500 miles roughly.

She has done 69425 and has had considerable recent expense. I have kept her for high days and holidays since 2015 (summer use only) when she ceased to be my main car. I have had the auto box fluid changed in the last year along with a full service. I have had the cambelt and auxiliaries changed along with fixing a cracked thermostat. The car has had a pretty cossetted life but still the unexpected could happen. She now has classic car insurance which includes UK and Euro breakdown so some piece of mind.

What do you guys think, needless risk? or sensible idea?.

What is life without risk?

Go for it, a new car can break down the same as an older one.

Sounds like a good example and looked after. Go for it as Trikey said.

Full EU breakdown cover and your still tripping about it?

I take my ZT to Bosnia, Romania, Albania, etc.

Just drive sensible, if the car is maintained OK a few thousand miles isnt really an issue.

Last trip I did was 7500km in total.

I take my 1955 Land Rover all over Europe, 1500 miles to Switzerland & back including running about , same to Norway. I would go for it .

Worst that can happen....

Your car breaks down, you get a part sent overnight, get it fixed the next day wherever you are at a local garage.

Not really a big deal!

The very worst that can happen...

Engine goes bang, car is scrap, set it on fire and get the TGV home :)

Go for it! .... the roads in France are in general very good compared to UK and your 75 will waft along lovely!

For info .... we drove back through France last month and I'd put a yellow reflective vest in our front windscreen. I had spotted others were doing the same.

When we encountered a group of about 80 Yellow Vest Protesters just South of Carcassonne, although they initially blocked the motorway exit I just drove very slowly forward through the group ... and ended up high-five-ing the ladies and gents as I went through!

I know it's not all about the price of fuel now, but I think they understood my "L'essence, c'est la meme en Angleterre!!" .... but not sure my "Power to the People" was!

Don't forget your headlight beam benders, yellow vests, warning triangles (but you won't need them! :}) and spare bulbs. I carried a pair of those Breathalyser check things just in case, although not compulsory I was told. And just check out the newly reduced speed limits before you go too.

Enjoy your trip.... whichever part you are going to....

Bon route!

John

I have been to the Spanish Border and to Venice in my 75 and that was with 140K on it.

No problem So Go for it. And as has been said New cars can break down as well.

Thanks for the responses everybody, think you have all convinced me.

As long as your breakdown covers you I don't see a problem, just make sure it does, as some would give you market value of the car instead minus excess.
