EGR and inlet manifold cleaning
 

Been to the first Terraclean "workshop" today (Edd China there).

I thought I'd impart this with you. One of the products in the pipeline is an EGR cleanser machine. Hooked up to the car and it cleans out the EGR, inlet manifold etc, etc etc (in situ). It's a foaming process, a bit like a blocked drain. It will not be available for 18months as tests are on-going and the mechanical process has to be approved.

BUT.........what will be available in the next few months is the chemical that will clean the EGR, intercooler tubes and inlet manifold etc etc (if you want to remove them from the car) simply by dipping it in a basin for 15mins and giving them the odd swish. I have told the European supplier there is definitely a market for just the chemical, so he is going to bring it forward as soon as possible. The mechanical process will no doubt be in the region of £100 (I have no idea really) but our cars are so simple, to remove these parts, and dip them, has got to be the cheapest and best option.

I will keep you posted should anyone not fancy the 3hr scrub approach.

If it cleans the inlet manifold in situ. Where is all the s--- going to go if not thru the engine?

If I was to tell you I'd be lying cos I don't know, he didn't go into too much detail (I'm guessing because patents are pending), but we saw the equipment today and the results just from dipping the gear in the chemicals.

Apparently they have spent 3 years developing it and a few million $ in America/Canada, as there is new, even more stringient legislation coming out there (California) regards EGR's etc and they reckon they are getting the jump on it before cars will need to be scrapped because they fail the test. They also said it will be a matter of time before the UK follows suit. Sounds par for the course to me.

So what is the chemical which was used? I’m looking st cleaning my inlet manifold, but don’t know what to clean it with.

Oven cleaner foam, remove the manifold and EGR, once its off the car remove the MAP sensor, remove the rubber seals they can be re-used, remove the EGR, scrape out most of the large gunk and then fill with oven cleaner.

let this soak for at least 2-3 hours more if you can adding extra cleaner as you go, once it as soaked jet wash it out.

Clean the EGR out with an old tooth brush & Swarfega, again after removing the large deposits of gunk.

Wipe the MAP sensor over with a rag sprayed with carb cleaner do not poke anything into the hole.

I am currently sorting out a FL2 2.2 manifold after i removed the swirl flaps. its in the barrel, ready for its wash after several sprays of oven cleaner and some engine degreaser.

hi Artic, Great photos and info. My car recently failed mot on exhaust emissions so have decided to strip down the manifold and clean it out which I have started this afternoon. I used oven cleaner and and jet washed it out, I'll repeat this tomorrow, however I am concerned that after jet washing it out how dry does it have to be internally before refitting to engine.
