Anyone know about CCTV

If I buy swann cctv I can get a complete package, cameras and Digital recorder. They don't do a repair service if the recorder goes wrong!

what other makes should be considered?

I have a Yale system. Bought it as a Yale factory refurb. Seems ok but they do quite a few systems. Camera take a real hammering where I live and never had any problems, System been in a year. To be honest if it packed in and I couldnt sort it myself I would just replace the recorder.

I think most of the systems have a hard drive, my one did and it was easy to replace when it packed in

Is the software kept on the hard drive or in the systems electronics? Is replacing a hard drive just swooping one for the other and off you go?
I know nothing about formatting or how I'd install the software if needed onto a new hard drive.

Google is normally my friend but this time when it comes to CCTV info it has let me down

Mine would certainly be an easy hard drive swap. I would imagine that would be the same for a lot of them, the operating system being held in firmware.

firmware???? Is the part of the PCB such as a micro chip?

Yes. Unlike items such as laptops, other gear such as home dvr, games consoles etc, hard drive replacement is straightfoward as the gear itself holds the operating system, NOT the hard drive. When the drive is replaced the system sees it, formats it to the required format and installs the drive itself.

I bought a CCTV system off ebay around 12 months ago a Flourean brand, records in HD1080/night vision/Wi-Fi system which has worked flawlessly.

you can have it wi-fi or hard wired, I have mine wi-fi and all four cameras work great.

cheap as chips too.

This system didn't come with an hard drive (they do sell them with hard drives) I put a 1TB hard drive in the recorder from an old desktop that had an old Win 7 OS on it.

You just select format on the on screen directions and the drive sets itself up. also comes with software where you can see what's going on online with your mobile phone anywhere you are.

Just went and took a look at Flourean gear. I see what you mean. Pretty good value for money by the looks of it. I use the android app on my Yale system, not that much happens around my way but the biggest problem is general complacency so when something does happen, as in twelve cars broken into overnight last year and a load of expensive garden furniture stolen from the lighthouse over chrstmas everyone seems shocked and overlooks just how these things work and how vulnerable a small quiet village can be to hit and run crimes from the outside.
