Torgue Setting on a wheel brace?
 

Hi Folks,

I have a 75 Mk 2 Conny SE CDTi Saloon and it has a locking wheel nut adaptor.

I need to replace the wheel centre caps , but do not wish to use a Kik fit or HiQ branch to remove with an air gun , as they can 'round off/damage' the adaptors.

Therefore , I thought I'd buy a torque fitted wheel brace/wrench from Halfords.

Any comments welcome !

I , like many others, have replaced the locking nuts with ordinary ones ; they are more trouble than they are worth :shrug::}

As above, just bin them. Not worth the hassle one day they'll cause.

if you mean torque wrench then yes get one or 3 or 4. wheel nuts are 125nm but the hub nut on the end of the drive shaft is 350nm on my car. I think there are bolts where the torque setting is as low as 10nm and so if you are into dabbling 10 to at least 350 is the range you need to cover. I have 3 torque wrenches 20, to about 400 is the range they cover.

As above, according to the MGR Workshop Manual, wheel bolts - 125Nm.

If you want to get rid of the locking wheel nuts, I just realised I still have my old wheel nuts sitting around in the shed. I'll happily bring some over on Wednesday if it helps :}.

Apologies if I'm missing something but is it necessary to have the wheel off to replace centre caps? Do they not just pry out?

I purchased a torque wrench from Screwfix I think, approx £25. Covers 28Nm to I can't remember how high, definitely over the 125Nm required to torque wheel bolts. I use it for a final tighten so I don't overdo it, as do my preferred tyre place, which is one of the reasons I go out of my way to go there.

As far as locking wheel bolts, the early design like I had on my 51 plate 75 were dreadful and eventually two had to be drilled out after too many visits to dodgy tyre places. The ones on my current 06 plate ZTT are MUCH better. I don't actually think anyone is going to desire these alloys though, so it's likely you don't need locking bolts.

I think if you try to remove the centre caps with the wheel in place, you stand a very good chance of causing damage to wheel and or centre cap. It is a pain but I remove my wheel to remove centre cap

Where I go for my tyres (and MOT) they ALWAYS do the nuts with a torque wrench, windy off, light spin on and then finally set with the torque wrench. That's why I go there. Sign of a thinking fitter.

If the old caps are scrap, then pop a self tapper through them and pull them out with a pair of pliers. No need to touch the wheel nuts or the wheel.
