CDTI engine fan pulsing when Aircon is on

Hi guys,

Having read a few threads, I think I need a new fan resistor...

Symptoms are with the aircon engaged (which works fine!) The engine fan starts up for about a second before cutting out. This is a repetitive cycle which occurs every 10 seconds or so.

Almost as soon as the fan spins up, it cuts out again.

Am I thinking along the right lines?

For reference, it's a late 2004 CDTI Contemporary. Just eleven thousand miles on this one, too.

You are indeed - and you'll have the later 2-speed fan which uses this:

Check that it definitely has a resister fitted. A friend has a 54 reg 75 diesel and his fan was a 3 speed and we had to change the fan unit with a good used 2 speed.

Hello Sebastien, to determine if the fan uses a resistor for the aircon low speed, look through the front grill so you can see the fan. Look at the 2 o'clock position behind the fan blades. If it's the resistor type, there will be a thin metal block about a half inch wide and four inches long attached to the fan guard (you may need a stick/cane to turn the blades). That's the thing you replace with the uprated gold type. You can get these as bare units or ready-to-fit kits from forum traders, eBay or electronics outlets like Farnel.
