Beat me to it! Your transponder - the item circled in red is either missing or loose in the key back.

Possibly your key isn't synced to the car

I'm prepared to wager the transponder doesn't actually belong to the car, or it has been spiked during a cranking session when the car battery has been discharged.

It isn't a problem however simply contact any of the members offering the replacement key service and have a replacement transponder programmed to the car's immobiliser ;)

No is the short answer, the original PCF7930 transponder is a once only program device.

The remote boards are of course recyclable, but as you say it is programmed to the cars BCU and locks and locks the car remotely so not an issue.

Have a look HERE and compare that to the alternative of paying BMW £220 for a replacement key, where all you need in reality is a new transponder ;)
