Lower Plenum Drains solution!
Introducing the new Jules Plenum Drain Shield (copyright design)
In time for Autumn! Lower Plenum drains design flaw sorted !! Long time arriving I know (initial drawings made up back in 2005) http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...2/DSC00048.jpg http://lh3.ggpht.com/_CloltyGrcac/TI...4/P1040614.JPG http://lh4.ggpht.com/_CloltyGrcac/TI...0/P1040656.JPG The design flaw There is nothing inherently wrong with the 2 lower drains as such, providing it's only clean water that enters them! It's when leaves, bits of small twigs and pine needles enter them that the trouble begins, and clogs up the almost closed off ends of the rubber tube. These are in fact one way water valves which let water down but not up from the road. Some rubber tubes have been cut off or removed altogether (not an ideal solution for obvious reasons as more engine/road noise enters the cabin) MGR went to all the trouble of making the plenum covers with the square netted holes design (for filtering debris) but they left a 4 inch gaping hole where whole leaves etc can enter together with the Water from the windscreen, forming a muddy sludge. We all know what happens then ! ie A flooded plenum chamber causes:
The gaping hole can be found on the driver's side (RHS for UK models) and LHS for Left hand drive models. You will find the passenger side is blocked off with a vertical plastic moulding. "Why didn't they block both sides off? " I hear you say....................because the wiper arm mechanism would fowl it. This is where our specially designed shield works with it's right angle so avoiding the wiper mechanism. Description This is the new Jules Plenum Shield (copyrighted) which needs no tools or expertise to fit. It is manufactured "in house in North Wales" from a high quality BLACK plastic. Laser cut for a good fit and appearance. It's concept is a "Fit & Forget" part that will extend the inspection intervals for the plenum chamber. ie: Ideally only every 1-2 years or whenever you change the pollen filter. The shield while still allowing gallons of Water to flow through into the lower drains, catches all the debris thus preventing the tubes from blockages. Procedure Remove the drivers side scuttle hatch (very carefully so as not to break the 2 clips) Pull the sealing strip back about 12 inches (which allows the front edge of main scuttle cover to be raised slightly) Ease the Jules Plenum Shield in, which slots over the bonnet release cable. Fit as shown with the U shaped channel butted against the hinge bracket. Refit the sealing strip & scuttle hatch. Finally, there's another small hole that needs dealing with. Clip the plastic netting piece (supplied) into place as shown, to the Washer pipe clip next to the bonnet hinge. Now all your Plenum worries are over and a £500 ECU is protected!
