Murray Walker Leaves Us

Sad news that this legend has passed away, thanks Murray.

stevestrat 13th March 2021 17:36

What a loss to motorsport. The classic Murrayisms "There's nothing wrong with the car except that it's on fire".

RIP Murray, be one hell of a party with James hunt up there.

Murray Walker

That is such sad news but at 97 he got a few laps in. Not only a great commentator but a huge fan of all types of motorsport and also the man behind the" A Mars a day helps you work rest and play" jingle.
Rip to the man who for many will forever be the voice of Formula 1

RIP to an absolute legend. Used to love him doing the various commentaries.

That's awful news .

He was a true legend and was incredibly knowledgeable.

As a race marshal I met him, briefly, once at Donington. He was our Club President and was just walking around from marshalling post to marshalling post just having a chat as he went.

I'll bet he's having some great chats with Senna etc.

RIP.

A very sad loss......God speed on your final journey Murray.

Thanks for the memories .....

Just read this, he will be sadly missed, and although he is probably more famous for his gaffes, he was a motorsport legend

From poking Nigel Mansell’s plastered nose with his microphone to interviewing Mick Fleetwood and not realising that has band were responsible for the F1 theme tune

Some of his many famous quotes:

The lead car is unique, except for the one behind it which is identical.

This would have been Senna's third win a row if he'd won the two before

With half the race gone, there is half the race still to go

I don't make mistakes. I make prophecies which immediately turn out to be wrong.

There are seven winners of the Monaco Grand Prix on the starting line today, and four of them are Michael Schumacher.

IF is a very long word in Formula One; in fact, IF is F1 spelled backwards.

Mansell can see him in his earphone.

We now have exactly the same situation as we had at the start of the race, only exactly the opposite.

And Michael Schumacher is 37 seconds ahead, so he can refuel the car, change all four wheels, take off his helmet, have a smoke and a cup of tea, and rejoin in first.

Mansell is slowing it down, taking it easy. Oh, no he isn't! It's a lap record

And there's no damage to the car. Except to the car itself.

Unless I am very much mistaken...I AM very much mistaken...!

And the first three cars are all Escorts, which isn't surprising as this is an all Escort race.

It was actually a huge lump on Mansell's forehead. Accidentally hitting the lump with the microphone would have been forgivable but he full on poked it with his finger!

The interview!

Legend is too often used nowadays - but Murray deserves every syllable of the word. If it had wheels, he could commentate on it.
RIP a giant part of motorsport for so long.
