It's only worth 50p - SCRAP IT!

That's what my missus said when my 75 came back from the m.o.t. yesterday with a failure that'll cost more to fix than I paid for the car.

Help - what's the condition 1 and 2 price guides for a 2001 1.8 twincam 75?

I need to justify getting it fixed.

This one crops up quite regularly.

IMHO the correct first question is:

How much will it cost to replace the 75 and will that car absolutely, definitely give you the reliability/comfort/economy etc. etc. that you want?

Having got that figure, how much is it going to cost to keep the 75 on the road? Remember that this is probably THE best car forum for knowledge and expertise, willingly given.

Then a "simple" choice of what can you afford, or not, to do.

Good Luck.

A car with no MOT is worth scrap price.
What has it failed on? Parts are not hard to come by and at the end of it you would have a sorted motor.

Car cost me £300 two and half years ago.

In that time I've replaced rear brakes and the exhaust.

It's failed on rusted out lower rear suspension arms both sides which I've been quoted as approx £250.00 to buy and approx £120.00 to fit (a not very nice job I was told) and a couple of bushes up front.

I've had plenty of head ruling the heart automotive moments but if I can say the car will be worth ...... then happy days I'll get the work done.

There are two sellers o ebay selling both upper and lower arms plus fixings for £270.00 and £315.00.

Is that overpriced?

These are the best upper rear arms on the market and these will be the main failure points, purposely redesigned to improve quality.
Couple of hours per side to fit. not too bad a job as long as you respect the inner bolts have captive nuts and need to be slowly and repeatedly eased back and forth to remove the bolts without the nuts breaking free.

How many times do I hear of 'men' saying '' the wife says I have to get rid of , or the wife doesn't like the car so therefore ....... !

They don't consult us when they splash out on a new handbag or shoes do they ?

PS I writing this because my wife doesn't visit this forum :p:

Thankyou all for the comments and advice, car is now booked in to get the work done as my wife caved when I told her the next car could be worse and that at least we know where we are with this one.

Happy now.

Please make sure they use the arms in the link, there are many very poor copies of the arms about, some are simply not fit for purpose and others that could fail far too soon.

Are we talking lower arms or upper arms? Its usually the upper ones that rust out first. Lowers are much easier to remove and replace.
