Succumbed to Old Age
No Not me well not yet.
But after 17 years the roof lining has succumbed to old age and started to sag, I know this happens a lot but has anyone found a simple solution to hold it back in place?. Would a warm/hot iron applied to the lining soften the adhesive and allow the lining stick again:shrug: any suggestions anyone? |
I believe the roof lining is applied in a process using heat, that makes a glue/foam expand and stick to the substrate.
It deteriorates over time, and the foam turns to "dust". You can get a 3M product (spray glue), but the adhesive is not strong, and repairs are usually not very successful. I use a few stainless steel pins to hold the lining up. It works fine, and nobody will notice unless you specifically look. If you arrange the pins symmetrically, it looks perfect! |

You can buy them for next to nothing in any shop selling yarn, fabric etc.
You normally used them for holding fabric together for sewing. any tailor, if you still have them over there? would have them by the dozens! |
I was wondering when this would start happening to the Rover 75 roofs, so far mines good, however mines a 2002 so it could start now? Noticed our Rover 45 2005 roof lining has already started to go, the R75 seems to be made of sterner stuff, however as we hit 20 years old for some models... its coming!

Here they don't last more than about ten years. Typical of English cars. my Jaguars do the same.
My Mercedes does too, but it is 35 years young!:D https://i.imgur.com/oUJg1GO.jpg |

Try steaming it, when its hot press the lining back in place. The steam can reactivate the glue.

I’m afraid the only real solution is to re trim the headliner.
It’s not as difficult as it seems. I’ve done a few in my time including the 75. Results look far better than pining, steaming or re glueing. |
