Wilko closures.

I for one am very sorry to see them go.They stocked such a wide range of ironmongery,tools,consumables and bits and bobs generally at a very competitive price.It was so convinient to pop in and get the bit you needed.Another national institution gone from the high street 😟

I understand how you feel, however, if I want to buy from Wilko I have an 18? mile round trip, parking issue and an hour out of my day. If I order from Amazon, I can do it from my bed.
High street stores has an awful lot to compete with. I visit other high street stores as do many other people so why not Wilko? I think for me the perception is cheap stuff of poor quality or quality stuff is expensive. "It does not matter if I am right or wrong" if people feel this way they will not visit. Is this where Wilko failed?

I feel sorry for those that will not have a job.

They employed 12,000 people across the country Ian,a few of those will be retained ln Poundland and B&M shops opening on former Wilko sites.I found them very convinient 5 of their shops a short drive away. Ideal when you wanted a TV aeriel plug etc at 3pm on Sunday afternoon. Far quicker than waiting for Amazon to post one :}

We had one down our High Street. Handy for big bags of tealights, woodstain, varnish & electrical bits & bobs, among other things. We'll miss them too.

I had no idea that they'd been around since the 1930's though. I once heard someone comment on the radio that it's relatively uncommon for a company to outlive a century of trading.

We used to go to town, do bits of browsing and shopping, have a cuppa and a cake and home again. What with parking costs, petrol and the snacks, it was £25 before we bought anything! Most of our shopping is online now. I've reduced the mileage on our cars, so reduced my insurance costs too. We aren't skinflints by any means but spend the spare cash on what we really need now.(Corfu, here we go again!!!):D

I've posted before that I NEVER buy anything from Amazon, on principle.

We have a couple of their distribution depots fairly close and the working conditions and practises are akin to Medieval serfdom.

For a company to make almost unfathomable amounts of money and treat it's employees so shabbily is, for me, abhorrent so I make my choice and shop elsewhere.

They make that profit in Luxembourge where they pay less tax.

Just apply a turnover tax in UK

Yes sad to see Wilko's go, I bought a lot of seeds/seed potatoes,fertilisers from them over the years. Already put my order in for next years seed potatoes from another company.

They were my first port of call for paint. Bought nearly all my paint from them over the years,they had a very good range competitively priced. The quality of their home brand was very good too in my opinion.

So sad to see them passing into retail history. Does not seem that long ago that there were rumoured to be buying my ex-employer F.W. Woolworths.
