Springs fracture on all makes of car all the time. Being outside the recall list doesn't preclude the possibility. The recall covered a known batch of low quality springs and that's it. If you fit these gizmos, the chances of a bust tyre is reduced. A cheap insurance policy for all 75/ZT owners. Thankfully, 90% of fractures reported on the forums occur with the car stationary or just starting off. The colder months are statistically the worst for fractues of all cars across the board (AA report).

As to the bolts supplied with the kit, they're self tapping type. The holes in the spring cups are not threaded.

My driver side front spring went when stationary too. Just as well really!

They are much cheaper than tyres and could save a nasty accident if they go whilst driving.:xmas-smiley-032:

I take it that the really useful bit is the upturned rim part of the protector plate.
Did later struts have this safety feature built into the spring lower 'flange'. I've got a new pair of struts off DMGR (from MGR China) being fitted tomorrow and they are the same design as what's coming off the car (which I believe is original off the line in March 2004) - which is a large flattish flange, no upturned rim. I'll have to check to see if the two holes are present in the flange otherwise it's a drilling job too if I have to fit protectors.

Tyre protectors work

I would say purchasing a set of tyre protectors is worth while, as I recently found out when I fitted some front & rear brake pads for a member.

I was shocked to find the spring had broken, but at least the protector did it's job.

I removed the broken part of the spring, the rest of the spring was sitting in the protector & cup of the shocker, I informed the member to get the spring changed asap, as we know it is best to get the spring changed in pairs so if one cracks/or is broken then it is not going to be cheap.

Hopefully we'll have another Group Buy on these soon, so even more members can protect themselves from the dreaded ping! :)

Looking at under £10 per set, all being well (and subject to numbers).

Rimmers did have a quick sale on these sometime last week or week before and they were selling them for £10.00 seems they have put them up again.

You can also get them from different suppliers as here below if you do not want to wait.

That's some good pricing - especially the last link!
I'd always advise people to fit these as a matter of urgency, not something that's worth waiting to save a few quid over.

I think XPart have put the price up, hence Rimmers doing the same - but either way, even at £20 you can't put a price on safety.

Was just a little heads up for anyone who wants another set for the shelf than anything else, not meaning to intrude :)

AllCarPartsFast (Endon) are selling them on eBay also around £16 but add another £10 for delivery!
Elsewhere on ebay for £30 delivered!
