Wiper stalk gone stiff

My wiper stalk has lost its click for the washers. It still works, but the stalk is stiff to move forwards and no longer clicks positively.

Is this common? Not heard of it before.

Not common but , maybe, a squirt of WD40 might fix it. Won't do any harm to the electrics.

I'm sure Mickyboy can supply a replacement if you need one David.

Again, I had the same problem. Took it off, cleaned the contacts, moving parts, refitted and all fine

One of my HGV drivers kept having problems with stalks and it was down to him being a heavy smoker and the stalk innards used to fill up with ash!:icon_rolleyes: Ash is not a lubricant we found.

Was yours the washer switch? I couldn’t see how to open up that part of the mechanism. I have sprayed some WD40 in, but its not much better.

Feels like the return spring inside that part has maybe moved in to a bad position or is full of dirt, but i cant see how to get in to look without risking breaking it all together.

WD40 is NOT a lubricant!, but a water repellent (dispersent =D) spaying it into the switch will have the effect of creating a gunk and make things worse, so you need to remove , dismantle clean everything with isopropyl alcohol. allow to dry, spray with a quality electrical contact cleaner sparingly, wipe excess off with lint-free cloth and re-assemble.

This is the indicator side, not sure if the wiper is the same, but by removing the 4 screws on the back, and easing it off carefully so as not to lose the springs inside, you can clean and lubricate the innards.

Speed read the OP thinking it was the indicator, sorry

It dries out and often un-gums things so they work again.

We all know it's not a lubricant.---
