Rover 75 CDTI 3rd to 2nd gear?

I find myself asking a question again, I only ever seem to check the forum when I have issues....which isn't often with my car.

I have a 2004 Rover 75 2.0ltr CDTI with 320,000kms under it's belt. I have already swapped the gearbox when 2nd gear became impossible to select and now a similar issue has arisen.

The car goes up through the gears without a problem, however it's become impossible to go from 3rd to 2nd unless virtually stationary. Is this a sign of the synchro going again? The clutch bite is low on it's travel and I wondered if bleeding the clutch might remedy it.

Any suggestions greatfully received.

MORE LIKELY THE LINKAGE TO THE BOX NEEDS CHECKING.--THE SYNCRO RARELY GOES ON THESE GEAR BOXES.

( Sorry, Caps Lock was on. )

Bleeding the clutch might help.--There's also some info on the forum on how to reverse bleed the clutch. I did mine that way and it cured it.

Thanks for your thoughts, I wouldn't have thought of reverse bleeding, doesn't it go all over the carpet? I intend to have a look after I've changed the cat' on the MGF.

I personally would not reverse bleed a clutch knowing what some people have got out of the bleed nipple end. ( note the name). You could cause damage to the master cylinder. I only bleed mine the usual way.

You say the pedal goes down quite a way before anything happens.--This indicates low fluid level in the master cylinder.---You only pump in a small amount so as not to make it over flow.--About one inch in the plastic tube.

You could, maybe, disconnect the line in the middle and just bleed the bottom half to clear any rubbish out of it.---

Thanks to all who responded. I have bled the system and I now have a clutch between 3rd and 2nd, it's a bit notchy but works.

The fluid level in the m/cylinder was about 1/2 way and I think I flushed out the old fluid so maybe that was it.

Incidently over the years I've bought many devices to aid bleeding (hand vacuum pump, compressor operated thing) but they ALL leak air, the only method that seems to work is a pipe on the nipple into a jam jar witn fluid in it.

Let's see how long it lasts.

Well I'm now back to where I started 2 weeks ago, the change for 3rd to 2nd has stopped working so either I need a new clutch, slave or linkages.
Ho hum engine out I suppose! At least this time I know the flywheel has been changed to a single mass one, when I changed the gearbox a few years ago I bought a new cluth only to find the duel mass clutch won't fit to a single mass flywheel.

Am no expert the consensus view is to stick with a dual mass flywheel
