Just changed a rear wheel bearing...lots of pictures.

Well having just changed all the discs and pads and adjusted the handbrake....300miles later a new noise!!methinks a rear wheel bearing, so I thought it might be of some help to do a photo strip..not that kind of strip!! so here goes guys.....
Genuine SKF kit( not recycled ocean liner from the East....£80.00 inc vat)

http://i226.photobucket.com/albums/d...1/P5070439.jpg

dust cap off, retaining nut unstaked

http://i226.photobucket.com/albums/d...1/P5070440.jpg

wheel back on,on ground quality32mm 6SIDED SOCKET NOT BI HEX
and 1/2" knocle bar...just crack it

http://i226.photobucket.com/albums/d...1/P5070441.jpg
unwinds easily
http://i226.photobucket.com/albums/d...1/P5070443.jpg
by the way,no need to remove calliper guide pins, just undo 2 13mm calliper support housing bolts and secure via tie wrap to coil spring, bearing housing coming off, just gently tease it, no puller required

http://i226.photobucket.com/albums/d...1/P5070444.jpg
lots of corrosion here...40,000only too!
http://i226.photobucket.com/albums/d...1/P5070446.jpg
all cleaned up, copper anti sieze and a little tip, paint the handbrake adjuster white...it makes it much easier to see in future
http://i226.photobucket.com/albums/d...1/P5070448.jpg
going back together, spin the nut clockwise whilst spinning the housing anti-clockwise
http://i226.photobucket.com/albums/d...1/P5070449.jpg
http://i226.photobucket.com/albums/d...1/P5070450.jpg
nearly there! torqueing up to155lb/ft
http://i226.photobucket.com/albums/d...1/P5070451.jpg
adjust the handbrake, this is MUCH easier if you remove the caliper as it does not dragthe disc and you can feel the shoes biting
http://i226.photobucket.com/albums/d...1/P5060423.jpg
this is interesting, the 2 old bearing races, they look o.k at first sight
http://i226.photobucket.com/albums/d...1/P5070452.jpg
BUT the inner one has a chip out of it, just next to the pencil...

OOPS!! that should read knucle bar!!:Danyway I hope it helps anyone who wants to "do" a bearing, quite straight foreward, in fact it took longer to type all this out!!!P.

Great picture tutorial Podge, haven’t had mine stripped down yet, often wondered what it looks like inside.
Well done, the photos certainly help!

I love the fact the car is being propped up with planks of wood. Now thats what I call a "Proper Job".

Just out of interest how long did it take?

Great thread.

NOT HUSH PUPPIES!! and it took just a cup of tea past an hour tops, o.k. I had replaced the discs yesterday so it came apart easily. As for the wood....railway sleepers and oak blocks.....then you can do whatever you like under there!I am sure those broken springs have been like it since I bought the car, I will get the new ones crack/flaw tested at work before I fit them.P.

Excellent how-to podge. How do you fancy it being immortalised into a How-To?

Cracking thread Podge, bearing in mind lots of people like to do their own maintenance, a most informative posting.

How long ago do you reckon that spring broke?

Seems a fair bit of corrosion on the broken face of the spring.

podge 7th May 2008 20:54

I have p.m'd you Simon, I reckon those springs have been like that for a LONG time, yet it came witha fresh m.o.t in November! and to think I have had a very heavy cast iron MGB engine in bits in the back!! just shows how well built these cars are.....the last time I had a broken rear spring was in a Mk2 Cortina Estate.........mind you I did have half the kitchen floor from Stratfield Saye House in the back!!..don't even ask!!When the new springs arrive from Rimmers I shall take them into work to get them crack/flaw tested, I cannot believe these springs break from everyday use, we shall see.P.
